Haven't finished yet, but so far my conclusion is "worth playing, but does not live up to predecessor".
Maybe a working link in the first place wouldn't hurt? :P

Updated, no changelog yet but it adds a new materials folder and file to that PhysX stuff and it changed the exe, launcher and GDFInstall.dll file.

Thanks but according to CF Toolbox nothing was updated, maybe you've messed with some files and steam re-downloaded them.

Interesting, all files were original (Skidrows was Mafia2_.exe) and I didn't have that Materials file that was added before this update, some issue with Steam when it was first installed perhaps?
(Similar to the second archive I uploaded earlier with some modified files when I ran Steam://validate/50130 to check so everything was OK.)

EDIT: I'll run the files trough Winmerge after re-downloading those two previous archives I posted, should show if anything was done.
(Won't explain that file though but it could be something with the above if validation didn't go properly.)

EDIT: It was patched but the NCF's are old version again after a second update but the files remained.

Every time you validate the files, main exe gets deleted and steam creates a new exe for you, because the main exe has CEG.

I edited the post a bit to fill in more info I found and a basic EXE comparison, the validation I mentioned was done for the first update I uploaded and then that lead to the second update, this includes the main exe and NCF's but as you said these are probably identical to those in the first pack though it also includes installscript.vdf which I missed initially, that was some time ago though, this is a proper update but now it's removed as per the above forum post on 2K about savegame issues. :)
(Though the changed files remain for now.)

EDIT: Unless that PhysX file is all that remains since it's a new file and the launcher and main exe is a bit random even if it's the same files or versions due to said CEG protection on it, could also be.

EDIT: So that's the CEG system, thought it was some sort of encryption method only and nothing like that, interesting and problematic as well if the (EXE.) files are starting to be turned system specific as that makes updates sort of useless to other people if shared in this way, useful to know.

ok I read that thread and it seems they've released a faulty update for a short time and now it's been removed.
However I ran a hash check on your new files and my old files and they are the same except the exe.

of course it differs, it has CEG (Custom Executable Generation).
Every time steam download the exe, it adds some information about your pc (mostly position of some folders on hard disk sector) to the exe and makes it unique for you, so your exe will be useless for someone else.

Well, we have a CEG patcher that can handle early build of CEG like L4D2, COD:MW2,... and also SmartSteam can handle more CEG protected games, However Mafia 2 uses a new build of CEG that requires a new CEG patcher.

Useful to know, I had the CEG method and implementation systems and how I thought it all worked wrong then, makes sharing updates impossible though if it's all tuned to a specific system, interesting info.
(So it was somewhat like that, patched the game, NCF's update and the files affected were altered or rather updated, patch is pulled and old NCF's cause a redownload of the previous data minus any files not in their information like that PhysX material thing.)

EDIT: Though we'll probably see a update early next week anyhow once this savegame problem is identified and fixed, will be interesting to see what they change if a update log is posted about it.
(People have complained about PhysX cloth being CPU only which isn't uncommon for it to be so that might be where that file comes into play along with exe updates, memory leaks were also mentioned but I thought it was partly due to older cracks using - or so people guessed - demo code instead of the proper retail exe code, unsure how Skidrows proper fixed exe fares but I've had no issues with it.)

EDIT: Or it could be to support the upcoming DLC.

In regards to the above this might not be useful at all but here's the proper update this time, DLC is on the way as well but will take a bit longer, apparently the patch fixes something with the DLC (And maybe more.) but it might work somewhat anyhow without it until a proper crack is released.

It is just the updated files (I think I pointed that out though it might have been a bit vague.) I can't crack Steam (Or anything, haha.) and especially with this new form of CEG protection on it, it might work via loader/emulator method though I'm uncertain (Possibly it might not work at all as mentioned in the above discussion about CEG and such.)

DLC is at 95% done at the moment and I guess a group like Skidrow or so will get the update fixed in a day or two as well.
(They've been pretty active lately with Steam updates, perhaps they'll include the DLC as well.)
