I love it!

I think the reason is Tunngle uses OpenVPN. so it needs to open some specific ports.
dunno about Evolve but surely it uses something already opened. could be TCP 80?

I don't know to be honest.
Could be. For what I know, Evolve uses its own VPN driver/tunneling/whatever it's called.

Mega-post of Evolve features :)

Evolve has (but not limited to):

  • Gametime tracking
  • Screenshots (Twitter or Facebook integrated upload)
  • Video Recording (YouTube integrated upload)
  • Game profile pages (for example; here is Borderlands 2: https://www.evolvehq.com/games/borderlands-2 )
  • User profile pages (for example; here is my profile: https://www.evolvehq.com/players/espionage724 )
  • No advertisements (on both website and client)
  • No malware (no OpenCandy bull or anything else like that)
  • Friends list (chat protocol is XMPP-based, and allows you to set status updates)
  • Can link other chat protocols (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Xfire, Steam (if open), probably more)
  • VOIP (SILK Codec if I understand right)
  • VPN (using modified LAN Bridger from Echobit; the Party System in Evolve is the VPN)
  • Uses native LAN IP's (10.*.*.*; whereas other services like Hamachi can cause issues since it uses 5.*.*.* (being actual WAN IP's))
  • Group Support (for example; here is a fan-made last.fm group: https://www.evolvehq.com/groups/lastfm )
  • Matchmaker (for example; if I want to play Borderlands 2, I just hop in Matchmaker, wait a bit, find someone, get thrown in a party, play)
  • Hardware-accelerated user interface (makes for a smooth experience, whether it be on the desktop, or in-game)
  • Highly sophisticated in-game overlay (no known reports of triggering any anti-cheat clients that I'm aware of)
  • Player statistics (for example; here is the alltime playtime charts: https://www.evolvehq.com/players/-/charts )
  • Great team of moderators and administrators
  • Dynamic Forum signatures that update based on profile (for example; here is mine: https://badges.evolvehq.com/evolve/larg ... qbEMgv.jpg )
  • Does support pirated games (but do note, support from the main Evolve chat about pirated material isn't allowed)
  • Links to other profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Xfire, YouTube, Playstation Network, Steam)
  • Keeps track of Achievements (on Playstation Network and Steam; with LIVE and other services coming later)
  • Hosts gaming events (for example; here is the event page for the "Go to Hell" Diablo II event that happened the weekend before Diablo III: https://www.evolvehq.com/go-to-hell )

And the best part is... all of this is 100% free!

Now to name some random scenarios as to how Evolve may be useful (but not limited to):

  • I want to host a Minecraft server (or another game server). I simply set the server up, put myself in an Evolve Party, put that party in Matchmaker, and now anyone who wants to play Minecraft can be put in my Party, and we can play together

If you know what your doing, you can even setup Evolve on an unattended computer with a server, put a Party in Matchmaker, and BAM, dedicated server anyone can join freely

  • Me and my guild on Guild Wars 2 (or other MMORPG) need to have a place to chat, but I cannot afford to pay for a voice chat server, and lack the skills and resources to set a server up myself. Evolve will allow us all to use a private group chat and voice chat, for free, and easily!

  • I need to keep a record of how long I play games for, and want to feel beast for how much time I spend gaming. Evolve keeps a record of how long I play games for, and ranks me based on how long other's have played games for. (I myself am ranked 22 at the moment out of 40k other people :p)

I haven't used Tunngle for years, but I believe Evolve offers way cooler features for gaming overall, a cleaner experience, and possibly even a better community (Evolve has a great community in my opinion).

Also, I'd like to help clarify a few concerns I noticed in this thread:

  • Evolve will let you use pirated games with it's VPN service
For example, if me and 2 other people pirated Torchlight II, we could play it on Evolve's VPN service. There is nothing in Evolve's coding that will deny you from using pirated games, with any part of the service (this includes gametime tracking too). Do note though that game definition support on Evolve is based off of legally purchased games though (so if a cracked game has a weird exe and totally different file structure, it may not be detected for gametime)

Support for pirated games is not given however (at least from main Evolve developers, main group chat and forums). So for example, if you have a packet error with a cracked version of a game, you will have to figure it out on your own. If you own the game, you can ask for help though.

(I'm not encouraging piracy though. I do recommend you actually buy games if possible. I also bought Torchlight II the other day)

  • Evolve does have a Matchmaking and Lobby service
If you use Matchmaker, you will be put in a Party (or in other words, a Lobby) once players accept. From there, you can plan out who is hosting what, under what conditions, and etc.

  • Evolve's VPN service does not (in most cases) require you to port forward
Party System uses UPnP to forward a port. In most cases, this will work, and you won't have to do anything. Under some exceptions, you may have to allow Evolve through a 3rd-party firewall (if used). There is also a rare case your router might not have proper UPnP implementation, in which case, you'll have to forward a single, specific port (of your choosing) in order to use Party to the fullest.

  • Evolve's VPN service is also a direct-connection between people (in most cases)
In the event you cannot port forward, and/or have strict firewall/network rules, you can still use VPN! You will simply be "relayed". What this means is, packet data will be sent from the host of the party, through Evolve servers, to your computer. This may introduce a little bit of latency however, but at least you can still use VPN :)

And finally, here is Evolve's homepage: https://www.evolvehq.com/
And if you want to add me as a friend, my profile: https://www.evolvehq.com/players/espionage724

I hope this helps some people out :)

For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to play with a cracked game, I couldn't even figure out where the players rooms are. Tunngle is more user friendly.

You go to the main Evolve home window and hit the Multiplayer Tab
Image

You can use the filter at the bottom left to specify a game, or look through the list, then you hit the red Find Game button, and then, if anyone else is looking to play that game, you'll be paired with them in a Party. At this current point in time, people are only looking to play on Minecraft and Borderlands 2, but people do look to play other games at other times.

You can also host a party for a specific game, just by hitting the Host Game button on that Multiplayer window, select your type of party (Public if you want random people to be able to play; Private for certain people), and host it.

As for cracked games, there is no special process needed. Same process to use Matchmaker and parties for legit games can be used on cracked games as well.

Yea i agree. I tried evolve and didnt like it, i don't think they even had a forum at the time. I don't really want to game somewhere where they treat me differently for using a pirated copy.

Hmm, they do have a forum now (it's even been revamped a tiny bit since a few days ago).

As for the piracy thing, the general rule is not to talk about it (pretty much standard in majority of places online). So with that in mind, if your looking for players to play a game with you in main chat, it wouldn't be a good idea to blatantly say you have a pirated copy, just simply don't mention it at all. For example, if I was looking for someone to play WarCraft III with, and my copy is pirated, I would ask in main chat "anyone want to play WC3?", people wanting to play would be invited into my party, and from there, we can talk about what map to play and etc. Nobody knows I have a pirated copy of the game (or even has to know), and everything is fine :) (I do own WC3 though, was just using it as an example :p)

If the pirated game requires specific steps to be played on LAN, you can detail the steps in the party as well, but you should not speak of it on main group chat. Party chats are not moderated by Evolve.

I know plenty of people who use Evolve who get around just fine, and don't exactly use legit versions of games most of the time.

If you were part of a private group on Evolve though, you can talk about piracy and stuff all you want. Evolve doesn't moderate community groups. So technically, if someone started a CS.RIN.RU group on Evolve, and made it private; you can talk about whatever you wish on that group's forums and chatroom (did I mention groups get their own forums?)

I have tried both and i think tunngle works as you can actually find people to play games. But here's the big problem for me I cant use tunngle which reallly sucks. I have tried installing the program on three seperate occasions and has caused my internet to disconnect. I had to call up my isp so they could fix up the problems it seems to cause. I have since gotten my internet upgrade and got a new modem but still with the same isp. I do want to give tunngle another chance but I hesitant that it can cause the disconnect problems again.

I prefer Evolve, as Tunngle is a bitch to portforward all the ports, to actually play a game with some random people.

Evolve never gave me any issues, hell I even tried TF2 MVM with some friends and a edited .gcf where I could place unlimited sentries and I could just host a server.

It is probably a good point that Tunngle is more popular then Evolve. Hopefully more people will use Evolve with time though :)

- Your router might not have a firewall
- You might be DMZ'd or Static NAT'd (whichever term your Router might use)
