So I decided to make this thread for 2 reasons:

1. There really isn't any dedicated Dead Space Series thread where problems can be discussed with all of the games or the series as a whole.

2. I've been debating in my head which Dead Space game is the best, so I'd thought it would be cool to discuss this as well.

Differences I saw between each of the games:

Dead Space (2008):
1. Origin story, easy to understand without knowing anything previously. Interesting without being too intrusive.
2. Great graphics and amazing sound design (even by today's standards)
3. Scary, erie atmosphere
4. Simple but effective gameplay mechanics and limited HUD/UI
5. Length is about 8 to 10 hours (i played through it like 6 times on all difficulties)
6. No multiplayer
7. Reasonable minimum system requirements (2.8 GHz pentium 4 single-core with NVIDIA 6800 or equivalent)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/17470/?snr=1_7_15__13

Dead Space 2 (2011):
1. Story not as interesting, seems like the silent protagonist fit the series better.
2. Graphical fidelity (lighting, sound) remains the same, better facial animations. More varied environments to the detriment of atmosphere. I never felt like the last one alive in Dead Space 2 like I did in Dead Space 1.
3. Less scary, more action. :(
4. Better no-gravity mechanics (although in Dead Space 1 it was more disorienting which was great)
5. Length ??? (I played it but never finished it (from boredom), maybe you guys can help)
6. Has multiplayer but its lame PvP.
7. Same minimum system requirements as Dead Space 1

http://store.steampowered.com/app/47780/

Image

Dead Space 3 (2013):
1. Story not any better than Dead Space 2...
2. More detail overall but still pretty similar to the other games in terms of lighting and sound.
3. basically has become more of a gears of war style action game. although no doubt the action is fun, it has lost a lot of what made the original Dead Space so amazing.
4. Length ??? (I never even played this one (for obvious reasons) so I'm not sure how long it is)
5. Has a Co-Op mode but what good is it when the game itself just isn't that great? :(
6. New crafting system ruined by micro-transactions.
7. Higher system requirements than previous entries (dual-core with a NVIDIA 6800 GS or equivalent)

http://www.ea.com/dead-space-3

For me Dead Space 1 was like the spiritual successor to Resident Evil 4, and with each sequel it has strayed away from what made the original such a unique experience. (much like the Resident Evil series). So basically I feel Dead Space 1 is the best. Obviously some of you may prefer Dead Space 2 or 3 with the more action focus but that would be because you just prefer action games and I assure you there are much better action focused games than Dead Space 3. Dead Space was born as a Survival Horror game. Sure a series can change but it has to actually be superior with its changes. Dead Space 2 (and more so Dead Space 3) does not do anything that other action games don't already do just as well if not better.

Anyway, feel free to discuss anything Dead Space related.

Good idea creating this thread, thanks for that!

I share your opinion of Dead Space 1 definitely being the scariest - and therefore best imho - part of the series. It has an unique atmospere and was a milestone on the field of survival horror games, at least as well-made as popular series like RE or SH. For me, it was the first game published by EA I bought and I never regretted spending the 50 € for this game, it really gave me sleepless nights and I played through the game on all difficulties successively without getting bored...

I knew it was only a matter of time for a sequel and I was really excited when the release date of Dead Space II was made public. I pre-ordered the game immediately (from an Austrian seller, because it's cut like hell in Germany) and was SO eager to play... While playing the game than for the first time finally I got disappointed quite fast, because the game is missing exactly the atmospere of being totally lost which made part 1 so unique. Isaac was acting resp. talking like he was on holiday on a sunny beach, he even made damn poor jokes with the totally unnecessary and feeling-disrupting female protagonist (What was her name, Elly or something like that...?). Of course, the game wasn't BAD if you looked at it alone, but compared with part 1 it was definitely a regression.

I then decided not to buy Dead Space 3, esp. due to the fact that EA announced that the game would be even more action oriented than part 2. There were so many good action games out 2013 that imho no one needs a Dead Space series part concepted not as a survival horror, but as an action game. I nevertheless grabbed the RLD version and played it for a few hours, but no, it didn't have a lot in common with its predecessors and I really disliked it. Despite of this fact I tried out the updated 3DM version + Awakening DLC (it was the first "big" release I ever downloaded from a p2p group...) only to end up in the same conclusion...

Dead Space 4? I'm really not interested... :?

I remember Dead Space 2 because near the end of the game they forced me to aim to put a needle in the protagonist's eye; it was rather disgusting and not scary :-|

no problem ;;)

i've read a bunch of posts all over the internet so i know this is the general consensus of real fans.

i never took games seriously back in the day. i used to think games were only good for action like halo. i was just a movie buff until i played dead space 1 in 2008. i never realized that a game could cause me the same emotions that movies like Event Horizon (1997) and Sunshine (2007) gave me. Well BioShock 1 did as well but thats besides the point. my point is Dead Space 1 was one of the first games that really took advantage of things like sound design and atmosphere. it really does hold up well even against the great sci-fi movies. and for me that really makes the Dead Space sequels even more disappointing as they focus more on the same crap that games have been doing for decades, brainless action eye candy...

yes i'm nostalgic and yes i was far more easily scared back then but honestly i went back to it recently and it still gives me goose bumps. i remember playing through the game on the hardest difficulty and getting the shit scared out of me. i was scavenging for health packs and i didn't have any, i was low on health and stasis and i had to face one of the brutes.... it was downright terrifying. why don't they make games like this anymore????

Spoiler
really dead space 1 didn't need a sequel. the mechanics were nearly perfect. graphics are still great. yea the game ended somewhat in mystery but it wasn't a cliffhanger or anything. it was fun not knowing exactly what happened after he left the planet.

We really share the same opinion as I see... When Event Horizon came to German cinemas in 1997, I was 15 years old and I had to show my fake identity card to get access, LOL... The movie scared the hell out of me (It shows you things ... Horrible things ... you remember?) and Dead Space 1 (and only 1) did the same... It was this feeling of absolute loneliness which made the game so unique for me, while the sequels were overloaded with unneeded characters and dialogs.

The only FPS that reached a comparable level of tension was Monolith's F.E.A.R. in 2006 imho (I had no idea what little red-dressed girls like Alma Wade were able to do with my brain...) and here are things quite the same: The game's successor Project Origin was not bad, but reached at no point the atmosphere of part 1, and F.E.A.R. 3 was complete crap...

Concerning BioShock... It's a great game, a milestone on the field of psychological profound FPS, no doubt about this. The way the devs illuminate the small border between an utopia and a dystopia was never beaten in its quality in a game ever since. And I must confess that I like this game's successors very much, too, although neither part 2, nor part 3 could ever fascinate me in a way part 1 did...

So, the world now knows my three favourite games, I must pay attention not to reveal my real identity here...

I appreciate you guys mentioning this title, it has drawn my interests for some time. I was able to find a link to a decent repack of Dead Space 1 a while ago... Been awfully busy lately to play it yet. I'd say in a months time when everything calms down, I'll give it a go.

this was the best repack i found for dead space 1. i installed it and it seems to work well. it has a lot of thumbs up on the page so i'm pretty sure it will work throughout all the chapters. i used to have my own compressed version using 7-zip but i wasn't able to get the file size as low as this repack. maybe free arc is just better compression but i suspect he might have encoded the audio. in-game i didn't really notice any degradation in the sound quality so its probably fine.

walking through the world of BioShock 1 was so fascinating. looking at this world and knowing that it was once a great place gave this very unsettling feeling. it was a breathtaking place to explore. and it actually felt like i was exploring it (unlike columbia in infinite, which felt more like a ride than anything else). the characters in BioShock 1 with their own insanity was amazing to experience. speaking of infinite though, it was not nearly as brilliant in level design, gameplay, or story as BioShock 1 was. people like infinite because it was pretty. but it is so shallow. even the art direction, although probably the best part of infinite, was still not as good as BioShock 1. i mean come on, racism?? and they don't even tell you why they hate them? i assure you real racists hate other groups for more than the color of their skin and this isn't portrayed well at all in infinite. they are racist so we must kill them! such a lame prospect it makes me nauseous.

we had to kill splicers in BioShock 1 because they were chemically altered. they were no longer human.

i heard fear 1 was a great game. i never got into it mostly because its a bit too old for my taste. i draw the line in graphical fidelity at 2007 :P games older than that tend to look too dated for their own good. but i'm sure it was great!

...in case you couldn't tell by now, i love drifting off topic ::P

I wonder if there's a correlation between them trying to implement a working multiplayer from 2 to 3 and the noticeable decline in quality from the first one.

Seems like nobody noticed that Dead Space 1 has been given away for free on Origin for the last couple of weeks now. Just thought I'd mention it.

Yeah me too. Here's the one I downloaded a while back: http://freegames.at.ua/news/2009-12-29-607
It's a good copy as well, smaller so you can use as a back up.

oh cool R.G. Catalyst is pretty trustworthy and 2.77 GB is a really nice cute little size :)

but how did you download it? the only links that work are deposit files and it is super slow. on top of that the links often die when it is half way finished which is rage inducing. thats why i typically only do torrent.

I know u didn't just say "cute", lol  . I'll let u get a pass this time  . Yeah i know what u mean a/b incomplete downloads. i used the depositfile links. The only advice I can give u that helped me successfully download it is: "Set it and forget it". I wouldn't let anything interfere with the bandwidth while you're downloading it. I didn't use a download manager, but J Downloader could help it finish for u.

lol yea i use JDownloader, it seems to improve my chances of success with these downloads. RIP putlocker. it was the best file distributor, had the fastest downloads for free users :(

downloading part 2 now so fingers crossed.

Dead Space was made by Redwood Shores (former Visceral Games). back then they were given tons of time and creative freedom making Dead Space. Then with EA corporate oversight, they had to "appeal to a wider audience" adding useless multiplayer (Dead Space 2 being part of the "lets add multiplayer to every game" craze that began around that time). and then turning it into an action game with Dead Space 3. I guarantee you that if Visceral was given true creative freedom, they would have done a better job, maybe even moved on to a different IP if they were allowed. then again Visceral doesn't have the best track record. The Dead Space series seems to be their best work.

I think you'll be alright. depositfiles has one of the more stable upload host servers. RIP putlocker, it was one of the best for free users, w/o limitations on parallel downloads.
