I think the crashes have to do with the fact that it can't write steam achievements and thus crashes

Hm if that's the case then it's funny drm :) but also gog.com version should work without crashes if that's the case.

GOG do not has steam achievements like NoWayMan said so it should be OK. For me it is ok so far...
