but i'd also buy a game if i already knew it's going to be awesome.

That's my policy as well.

I'm mostly willing to purchase games which specifically need a legit version for some of its features. This mostly applies to internet play.
The ones I'd purchase for this reason are Team Fortress 2, TrackMania United Forever: Star Edition, Left 4 Dead, Unreal Tournament 3, and many more. I hope this year's Steam Holiday Sale benefits me as to purchase the first two on the list at least. ::D
I'd like to point out that most of the games I named are made by companies that actually care about the gamers, and mostly benefit them with a lot of new stuff and unlockables.

But mostly I'd like to support many indie developers. These are the ones who really deserve our money. Especially because some of them have made their products DRM-free. I would've purchased World of Goo or Braid despite the fact that I have completed them already. I am currently playing Machinarium, so I don't think I'd be purchasing it, but I may buy the game's soundtrack to give my support. It's really cool and well done, and I listened to the EP now included in the game.

And it's obviously true that people buy more games when they have lower price. It's been demonstrated in Garry's Mod's 50% discount sale: the game has sold the same amount of copies during the sale than it had done during its whole existance :o
Steam is an important distribution platform for this cases: since it's digital distribution, the distribution costs are almost null, so a discount offer doesn't affect manufacturing negatively at all.

Spoiler
Also, regarding music, there are some artists that have made their music available not only DRM-free (Paul McCartney) but also licensed under Creative Commons (Jonathan Coulton, Nine Inch Nails), which means they can be used for any non-commercial project like remixes, videos, etc. Unfortunately, this also means that they can be pirated without restrictions
Still, some of their work is available for free. In NIN's case, they released a full album for 100% free download, and even in outstanding 96KHz/24bit quality. This, my friends, is probably the greatest gift a band has ever made to its fans ::D
Fans still intend to support their favourite artists. With NIN's previous album (Ghosts I-IV, which was also CC-licensed and the first of its four volumes is available for free download) its Ultra-Deluxe limited edition including vinyls, Blu-Ray and a data DVD with the song's multi-track files (for remixing) was sold out in few weeks. They were 2500 copies $300 each. You figure out the incomes :D

Also, a lot of people have bought Jonathan Coulton's songs and his new CD/DVD concert. And assisted to his tours. You all should listen to his music too, he's probably one of the most important musicians for all of us, since he's the one who composed "Still Alive", the ending song for Portal! And also one of his songs is now featured in Left 4 Dead 2! (It's "RE: Your Brains", and you can hear it in a jukebox which also includes "Still Alive") He's the greatest geek-folk musician ever (well, the only one, I think  ).

I put that in spoiler in case you're not interested in my opinion about music, and only care about games comments here ;;)

As said before, scene groups now encourage gamers to buy the games they download if they enjoyed it and want to support the developers. And we all should do so too. If possible, of course ;;)

The user below will not read all of what I've written down (oh, wait, wrong thread  )
