Here's the deal. I have 2 computers (1 desktop PC and 1 laptop). The desktop PC uses Windows XP, the laptop uses Windows 7.

I bought a LAN cable ("crossed", I believe) in order to establish a connection between them. So basically what I did was connect one end to the laptop and one end to the desktop PC. Both computers easily recognized the newly made connection.

My problem is different, however. I wish to be able to share files between the desktop PC and the laptop, using only the LAN cable and preferably without any additional software. From what I was able to understand, both computers must be in the same workgroup, in order for them to be able to see each other and share files (through "My Network Places" and "Network", respectively for Windows XP/7).

So I ensured both computers are on the same workgroup, but that quite literally did nothing. At this point, according to guides I checked on the internet, the computers should be able to "see" each other, but "Network" and "My Network Places" came up empty.

So what am I missing? Any help is appreciated.

I'd suggest to try file sharing in a standard network(PC-Router-Laptop) first. This could help to preclude the configuration.

Yeah, I do use a router (I guess it was fairly obvious). So you're suggesting I should try file sharing without the use of the LAN cable first?

make sure u have enabled networkdetection
also u need to enable your printer or a folder, in the network, otherwise ur invisible.

Well, you didn't mention that ::P Let me get this right, file sharing with router works fine but only laptop+desktop connected through crossover does not?
I don't know why this should not work :/

If you mean "network discovery" on Windows 7, I've enabled that and everything else needed, but no avail. Not sure what you mean by enabling printer or folder, what I did was right click on a folder and use the "Sharing" tab.

I'm sorry, I thought you assumed I had a router (and yes, I do). I actually haven't tried sharing with the router, as that's not my goal, I want it to work using the LAN cable.

Make sure both are in the same workgroup.
Launch an explorer window on either desktop or laptop
Type the following into the addressbar:
\\NAME
Where name is the computer name of the other device, so either laptop or desktop. You should see the shared folders/printers/etc. now

ok, I'm not sure if I remember how this stuff goes down on XP, but here goes.

Are the IP addresses from the same subnet (usually 192.168.x.y, where x must be the same for all computers of course)?
Is file and printer sharing enabled on both machines, in network adapter properties and in the respective network configuration places?
Can the computers ping each other? If not, can they ping each other with Windows Firewall turned off?
Are both in the same workgroup and do both have shared folders?

If all this can be answered with yes and no other firewall or similar software is installed on either pc, it should work.

I was too lazy to get Microsoft networking up and running, so I took the easy path to share files between my desktop PC and laptop: installing an FTP server on the latter :P

Obviously not a solution here, as you don't want to install any additional programs, but just wanted to comment.

Tried this previously, didn't do anything as the computers weren't visible to each other.

Here's the funny thing. The desktop PC needs an IP/subnet to recognize the LAN cable connection, while the laptop loses the connection whenever an IP/subnet is entered. I used IP: 192.168.0.1 & Subnet: 255.255.255.0 for the desktop PC and IP: 192.168.0.2 & Subnet: 255.255.255.0 for the laptop.

As for the configuration, I'm sure the laptop (Windows 7) is configured properly. However come to think of it, I'm not too sure about the Windows XP computer, will have to check that out.

Both have shared folders and I honestly haven't thought about pinging, guess I'll try that out as well, though I have tried turning Windows Firewall off.

I used an FTP server on a Windows 7 machine so the Windows 98 machine could send data. Thank god I remembered FTP from way back when.

I'm not an XP expert, but do this:
1. 'arp -a' and validate the computers have entries populated for each other.
2. Try a simple ping to verify the connection is operable.
3. Ensure the Windows 7 laptop is set to 'Home' network profile and has file sharing enabled in the network options for profile type 'Home'.
4. Validate the workgroup settings match and that NetBIOS names are properly resolved.
5. Disable the firewall on the Windows XP laptop - not on Windows 7, this can backfire. Then, make sure that the SMB rule is enabled in the firewall of the laptop.
6. (possibly) If all that didn't work, I can think of right now something else, open the group policy and make certain that they're both allowing the same NTLM versions for authentication. In case either machine had NTLMv2 enforced the other NTLMv1, this could break.

As said, I wouldn't consider myself a XP expert. Also, why are you running a computer on XP in 2012?

If the computers can ping each other, enable Guest user account on both of them using 'lusrmgr.msc'.
Using Win+R of course.
Then try connecting not through a name but through an IP address, like: \\192.168.0.1.

I have done this before, using my laptop (win7) and a friend's laptop (winxp).
It was quite simple. Select the folder/file on win7, select "Share with" bar from above, 'advanced sharing setting', select all the options and off you go! :)

Or if things are still messy, why not use a software, such as google grove, maybe? Tons of others available too.

I guess ChrisTX' post was the best so far, as I can see here. However, let's wait until b00t returns the ping-results. It doesn't make sense to post the same stuff over and over again.
