So I've got this HDD with a lot of bad sectors that I want to wipe clean before I RMA it.
I tried using HDDErase, but whatever I do, it won't detect any HDDs. So I'm looking for alternatives that can utilize the ATA Secure Erase command and don't just try to overwrite data. There are many tools that can wipe HDDs, but usually, they just overwrite on the filesystem level with over 9000 passes and whatnot and I can't seem to find out which tool can do it properly while not failing when there are bad sectors.
Does anyone have experience with this and can recommend something to me?

I can recommend you this
http://www.lsoft.net/killdisk.aspx

It's on top of my list right now.
I can PM you with the full version if you need it.

I got Kill Disk earlier, but couldn't find a crack for a recent version. However, I'm running what ChrisTX suggested and it seems to work. Thanks to both of you!

You are welcome.
Yes, the latest version is a pain to find. I was going to point you to the Disk Suite that has all the apps from LSoft. It can be either run in a Windows 7 Environment or in a DOS one.
If you still need it, I can PM you.

Anyway, glad that ChrisTX method is working for you!

Good luck.

You can also try this to fix your problem.

Steve Jobs
True story. This guy donated a PC or two to the local college by dropping them off at a doorstep and running. He got a letter sent to his house from the computer forensics department telling him "Too bad your Amway business didn't work out." Lesson, wipe your shit before you drop it.

RessourectoR has no idea of who will get their hands on the disk when he returns it, and he'd rather prevent than wonder. I'd hardly call it paranoia, specially if he stored files linking him to his staff position here, for example.

I found a private product key once on a shared dir on someone's PC at a LAN party. I copied it.
Who guarantees me nobody who gets the HDD in their hands thinks alike? My data belongs to me, it's a matter of principle. I may be paranoid, but while I'm hardly paranoid enough for what I do, you are just naive.
