Has anyone tried the winrar version 5.
I'd like to hear the thoughts from some of the pros here.

I had a quick look at the changelog and it seems they made some small improvements in compression and decompression (speed specifically) for the new rar5 format, but the main improvements were done to the recovery record feature, making it more reliable.

I did some tests on the quality of compression; I did not compare speeds.
(Default settings for dictionary sizes, might not be entirely comparable)

SQL Backup of this forum (920MB):
rar (best): 177MB
rar5 (best): 174MB
7zip LZMA2 (ultra): 131MB
7zip PPMd (ultra): 160MB


Game Alien Swarm (2049MB):
rar (best): 1108MB
rar5 (best): 1085MB
7zip LZMA2 (ultra): 1056MB
7zip PPMd (ultra): 1188MB


Note that these results are not representative; for example, PPMd is often better than LZMA2, especially for text data. Also, the rar formats contain 3% recovery information.
Interestingly, both rar compressions had 90%+ CPU utilization and LZMA2 was almost as heavy, while PPMd never went over 40%.
In conclusion, the new format is a slight improvement and should be used if RAR is the choice, but I don't think RAR5 changes the relationship between 7z and RAR. When I did these tests, I was hoping to see RAR5 have better compression than 7zip, but it seems that 7zip remains best overall (for the end-user anyway).

The main reason for using WinRAR over 7zip, in my opinion, are its recovery capabilities using data checks and recovery volumes.

Why warez group use RAR over 7zip?

Old rules. The uploaders on DDL sites or warez forums that use recovery volumes are still very rare, even though redundancy can be really useful with filehosters where there's always at least one part offline (netload..).
Scene rules have been outated for ..well, always. The difference between RAR and 7z isn't that big anyways, and it's not always 7z that is better. Especially with games, it depends very much on the individual game, and most other content is already compressed, so it really doesn't matter how good the compression of the archiving format you use is. And in that case, RAR just has much better archive splitting and all that recovery stuff.

You are right. For single video files there wont be drastic thange in size with .7z or .rar and with games they are mostly ISO format so it has installer where its already compressed (RELOADED - sometimes uses lzma2 ultra, but sometimes none , FLT - always none , SKIDROW - always zip)

I think we should discuss compress(1) instead. Alternatively, we could all migrate to pack(1) which is clearly superior to WinRAR anyways.

Also, every time a new WinZip release* is being made, we should create a new topic for that too.
