I installed quake to C:\Quake but I'm having trouble installing the mods and custom maps. How do I do it?

Quake I from 1996? Just copy the files to the ID1 folder. Mods should be extracted to the directory where the executable is, and can be loaded by running it with the -game <Mod folder name here> command-line parameter.

I'm having trouble loading it. So I put the mod folder in the ID1 folder but I don't know how to run it.
-- Edit --
Where am I supposed to put the -game <Mod folder name here> command? I've tried creating a shotcut and adding it in the directory but it just takes me to the original quake. Is there something else I'm supposed to do with quake mods. I've never used quake mods before so I'm jsut a bit confused.

Mods don't have to be extracted inside the ID1 folder, but the one where the executable is. That would be C:\Quake for you. Only maps, skins and other custom content go inside ID1.
Say you want to install the Omicron mod, which adds bots to deathmatch games. Extract it to the aforementioned directory. You will notice a folder called OMICRON now exists. Now you have to use the command-line parameter I mentioned before to activate the mod: -game omicron
For other mods, you replace that with the name of the folder they created.

The mod I'm trying to install has a folder in it called maps so does that mean I have to add it to the ID1 folder? Also to launch the game do I have to add the command to the glquake.exe? Or is there another executable I need to use?

So I added the command line to the executable and when I open it, it just looks like the original quake game. I've been mainly playing HL2 mods which make a bran new title screen with the mod so if I did it right, should there be a whole new title screen?
