Dude, it's the future. There won't be any evidence-free zones. The government and the police can do whatever they want, but the truth is, if you don't mess up, you (probably) won't have nothing to fear. However, if you fuck up, or they have strong evidence that points to you, chances are your privacy will go down the drain.

Look, I'm going to mention a very quick example of something that happened here, in my country, with a friend of mine, just so you see how quickly things can turn, and you lose all your privacy in a split second, all of a sudden.

My friend sent an e-mail which was supposed to be a joke to a colleague (let's call her ONE) of his. The thing is, he used OTHER sender address, which was the address of yet another colleague (let's call her TWO). He didn't hack colleague TWO e-mail account, he used a fake e-mail sender, I think it was emer.cz. So, colleague ONE received a mail she thought that was sent from colleague TWO, because she saw the e-mail address of colleague TWO. Apparently, they pressed charges against an unknown subject on the police. Eventually, the e-mail was tracked back at my friend's house. The police went there with a judicial court order to apprehend ALL computer related material. Yes, ALL. They took 2 desktops, an external drive, and even a digital video camera apparently. And all because of a fake e-mail, that had some sort of poem, and a photo of a blond pig attached. I won't reproduce the content of the poem here, that he showed to me a few days ago, since I don't really remember it entirely anymore (and traduced to english it's not the same as the original), but I actually thought it was quite funny. A bit distasteful to compare his colleague ONE to a blonde pig, and making her think it was colleague TWO who made that comparison, but funny, nonetheless. And because of that, a portuguese judge ordered the police to make a search and apprehend mission at his house, on a Saturday morning. So yeah, you basically aren't safe anywhere.

Just for the record, he still didn't get his stuff back, and this happened in May, almost an year ago.

Portuguese judicial system seems a little too strict for my tastes... and all for a spoof email, smh

^^ You wanna know what's even more curious?

Colleague ONE, the person who received the e-mail, didn't want to proceed with the charges, after the police communicated to them that my friend was the prime suspect. However, colleague TWO, the one who "sent" the e-mail, mantained the charges against my friend. I don't know the correct term for it, but the charges are "Defamation". ONLY defamation. They invaded my friend's house on a Saturday morning, over the reason of some freaking defamation charges. It's scary as hell to think that something like this can actually happen over a joke, or spoof e-mail, whatever.

Yes, the Portuguese judicial system is strict as fuck, and the result is: you end up not having enough resources to investigate "real" crimes in a timely manner, and every case takes a fucking eternity to reach a veredict.

-- Edit --

By the way, I didn't mean to hijack your topic with this rant. I'm sorry.

Nice to know. I'm with Apple. It takes a lot of balls to defend their position, and they're actually doing it. "The man" can just go fuck himself.

^^I think that's intentional. They knew they were sending Apple something they already knew about. Hypocrisy at its finest.
