As Mitsukarina says, .NET is the future. And for C++ programmers the change isn't too big (like the change from pascal to delphi once was ). It's evolution. I was strongly against .NET languages until about three months ago, when I got to test it. Now I begin to like it.
And about portability, there's mono framework that lets you run .NET exes
on linux, solaris and mac (didn't test it)
One thing I don't like about .NET is that the exes can be easily decompiled...

Well yes, you can have a .NET EXE that can run in a non .NET environment (though those tools are pricey and hard to get a copy of), you also have some quite descent obfusicators now. At the end of the day nothing that results in machine code is ever safe - ask hCUPa

You can free an object manually by setting it to Null, and it's good practice to do that. It's just that the Garbage Collector will free this for you automatically when it's not needed, if you were drunk when you wrote the code!

Woonderful, you all working on one launcher together, even hCUPa! I can't imagine a better project
Get started with this as soon as we have the development section, I'm gonna PM CF and Deviant now and then try to get Rustem setting it up.

hi Mitsukarina,
I can make extracted versions of cs 1.6 and popcap games, but i was wondering that with hCUPa's new steamEmu would it be possible for us to make HL2 based Stand-alones in the future.
Btw is their any other showcases i can download i like that feature.

I didn't know there was a problem making any standalone version - I assumed they all worked, but only tested a few. Do you have a specific problem, or have you not tried doing it yet? It takes a while
Well, Showcases were implimented for users to create "fashionable" web pages with game information, help guides, and stuff like that in general - but nobody bothered!
It's certainly not something I have time to do - Sorry Bawsack, but please feel free to have a go and post them here.
The next generation content launcher will support all UGL features (like packs and showcases)

i was going to try to make a showcase for dod source and cs source but how did you make the web-style page
i have a copy of dreamweaver 8 that ive fired up once and never used again.
and with the standalone thing its just says that you dont have all the necessary GCF's required after the extraction ,once i try to launch hl2.
but its not really important anyway i just wanted to make it for my mate but i guess i could just gime him a DVD with all the GCFs on it.

Dreamweaver is what I tend to use, just start by looking at the Demo Showcase and knock it around a bit, that's a good way to learn. Ah, bug!! - not sure if I'm going to release anither UGL now as my time will be spent on the new C# tutorial, and this in turn will lead to something that supercedes UGL anyway.

Yeah, ive been messing about with the HL2 showcase this morning,
and just changing the appid of the folder so it works for dod;s and cs:s,
Also i noticed in Photoshop that you can save your graphics as a web page so ill try that as im better with PS than Dreamweaver.

Because i'm lazy and a noob at dreamweAver,
I scoured the net this morning to find decent pages like the one used for HL2 but only for CS source , Dod source and HL2 Deathmatch,
unfortunately they aren't very good so i decided just for my own personal use to use steams info about the games.
DoD:Source
also this is good for giving minimum system requirements and for media links and content like below.
CS:Source
HL2 Deathmatch
Well that's me happy now, I like the look of the UGL skin mixed with the steampowered web showcases.
Cheers for the help and GL with those tutorials

after the last update on steam dod source and cs source stopped working. the error message is: "The procedure entry point SteamFindServerNumServers could not be located in the dynamic link library steam.dll" when UGL is launched as it was before.

sephirothvr wrote: any news/update on ugl ?? ive been watching this thread everyday.. UGL is no longer being developed (by me anyway) I have now moved on to the UCL project, see my sig below. UGL should continue to work however, as long as SteamEmu is updated and copied into UGL, as and when hCUPa fixes things. plutoe wrote: after the last update on steam dod source and cs source stopped working. the error message is: "The procedure entry point SteamFindServerNumServers could not be located in the dynamic link library steam.dll" when UGL is launched as it was before.
Latest update added new functions that are not fully supported in hCUPa's emulator. I think he posted a revised SteamEmu on page 40 of the SteamEmu thread - I don't know if that works or not?
You can try copying that steam.dll into your UGL folder, or you can try getting an older Base Source Engine 2.GCF and letting UGL re-extract the content.
I uploaded that for SASIO, and it does work, but I forgot what the link was Maybe SASIO can remember - I'm at work ATM so can't do much
Oh, and another thing that can work is copying in the older tier0_s.dll and vstdlib_s.dll into the UGL folder.
