Use UHArc and a batched WAVE to MP3 encoder, you won't get anything better.

actually I've read something about "reslists" or something like that, it can be used to deleted the unneeded materials and sounds from the game. and with UHArc I can get even smaller files.
but I couldn't find any tut of using this "reslists"

The files which are used by the game are included in res-lists. So if you remove some materials and sounds (bad idea btw) then you could cut the size too.

Hi to all! (I'm new to this forum... )
So, finally I've found a great community to all steam-related!
I own a legit version of Episode One (italian) and I would like to make it standalone; following the tutorial on the 1st post I've updated (with CFTools), validate and extract all the GFC file (with GFC explorer):
Quote: base source engine 2.gcf episode 1 shared.gcf half-life 2 episode one italian.gcf half-life 2 episode one.gcf half-life 2_italian.gcf source materials.gcf source models.gcf source sounds.gcf winui.gcf
(btw, the tutorial says "Don't extract base source 2.gcf!" from Source game, is base source engine 2.gcf the same file?)
So I get a folder with hl2.exe and other subfolders (bin episodic, episodic_italian, hl2, platform, reslist); following the tutorial I download I download revemu and copy rev.ini and Steam.dll to the main folder and steamclient.dll to the /bin folder.
Then I make a link with the parameters "-steam -game episodic".
Now I get: "Engine error: unable to load library client"; I know I should have other dll files but where can I find them? Am i doing something wrong?
Thanks and sorry for my incompetence but I am new to steam games.

SonsOfFreedom: Seems that you are missing source 2007 binaries.gcf
extract it instead of base source engine 2.gcf.
I have a problem myself, I tried to create stand-alone CS:S, I extracted all needed GCFs but when I tried to create a server via CS:S menu (didn't test playing MP in Internet) it loads resources etc but when MOTD-window(without any text) opens and shows the map background, it freezes. I have tried 2 times to extract GCFs again and I use rev-emu.

You first have to extract source engine.gcf, after it extract base source engine 2.gcf. Should work and you don't need steamclient.dll. This file is only needed for MP games. And be sure to configure rev.ini correctly.

Only HL2 EP2, Portal, TF2 and Garry's Mod use the new binaries 2007.

Ok, so I've start to download source engine.gcf included in Lost Coast (I have 56k connection...) and managed to extract the /bin folder (the only important one I assume), then I follow your advice, but there is still that error...
In rev.ini is I changed only Language=English, is there somethig else to do? BTW the game starts and I can see the blurry "wallpaper" of the episode one menu for a few seconds, but then it crash.
I've read somewhere in internet that updating the game files could cause some isssues, since my files is full update is this my case?
These are my GFCs:
Here I've posted the log file:

Your source engine.gcf is damaged, request a patch.
btw, I fixed this base source 2.gcf thing, thanks for informing me!

Hello!
It's a great tutorial! That's exactly what I'm looking for
I can make a single folder for Half Life 2, episode one, lost coast and Half life source the four games cohabitate in the same folder with no problems all games are playable but if I add to the same folder one of the game using source 2007 portal or episode two it doesn't work
Have you an idea to make all source and orange box in the same folder?

Yes, ChrisTX is right... you must extract those into seperate folders.

Ok thank's for your feedback
I have another question
If I make a standalone game from a gcf file version 4 for example, and a newer version is out (version 5), can I update my game with an Update Patch 4 to 5 or should I extract all gcfs?
