THIS NO LONGER WILL WORK, FOR ONLINE GAME PLAY, FIND A HAMACHI NETWORK. OR FIND MY NEW THREAD ON PLAYING WITHOUT LOBBIES.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've learned that there is another way to play online without Hamachi that is just as easy as before. This method will not only let you connect to lobbies once again, but you can use all the online features Left4Dead has to offer such as joining a game in progress, and playing without having to be the host.

First of all, you will need to have a patch/cracked steam with Left4Dead already downloaded. Next you will need a patch engine.dll and apply it to the game. To do this, just download the engine.dll from one of the links below and copy and paste it over the original engine.dll in steamapps\common\left 4 dead\bin

ONLINE ENGINE FILE:

SKIDROW's Engine
http://www.sendspace.com/file/43fiaw
Mirror : http://www.badongo.com/file/12227244

Edit: For people who have been getting disconnection problems, I've now provided SKIDROW's engine, which seems to fix almost all the problems that people have been having lately. If you're one of the people who has had problems, I highly suggest trying this engine.

After that, you will need the .bat and hl2.exe from the link below, extract it and place it into steamapps\common\left 4 dead.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/at0a0w
Mirror : http://www.badongo.com/file/12221228

Next navigate back to steamapps\common\left 4 dead and find a file called steam_appid and open it with notepad or another text editor and change the value from 500 to 501. Once that's done, save the file, and then right click the file, select properties and tick "Read-Only". Click apply then ok. Once that is done you can open left4dead with the Left 4 Dead.bat, and you will notice that it now shows steam community that you're in a game, which therefor also means you can join a lobby.

A problem with this is that you only connect and play with people who have done this too, you cannot connect to legit players, so it may take a while before finding a full game, but non the less, it works, and it works well.

If you experience any problems, please PM me or reply to this thread with the following:
1. What is the problem?
2. How often does this occur?
3. What engine.dll are you using? (Please state if you're not using a engine.dll that I did not post)

For your safety make sure you use a blank account, as there is a possibility of that account being disabled.

Crow, is it currently working? Because it isn't for me now.

Okay, so it does work, with the .bat being launched instead of the .exe

Edited the guide to add the hl2.exe and .bat file

Works for me. Make sure you get the bat file and the hl2 file.

edit: I will get into the game and it will say I am in-game, but when I try to host and after everyone joins and pressing start, the game disconnects saying server timed out or something. Hmmm...will try again later when i get back.
