Wasn't the website inaccessible when you had that down time a while ago?

That must have been somewhen in November or so (I suppose I could check the support tickets on OVH to determine that exactly). Don't think that'd impact 2 months after.

For all I care, we could just use an IP with a host file redirection we like... that is, if the site has an static IP adress (does it?).

It does have a static IP, and that would be possible; yet I doubt it's necessary. .us.to is from Afraid's Free DNS service which does not feature such scans and isn't run by money grabbers, unlike Dot TK. I'd doubt that this domain could vanish in the future.

I think that won't work unless the site has its own server with a dedicated IP, which isn't free, and then we could simply access the site via IP instead. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It would work, because as long as you request a site by a hostname (doesn't matter whether it is locally resolved or not) the Host HTTP attribute is sent in the header, which the server requires to return the desired website. As long as the server is configured to respond to that Host with a specific site, it does work.
However, simple access by IP wouldn't work, considering that attribute not being sent. That would redirect you to the default site of the server which isn't rinru.tk/.us.to

I am surprised that you didn't mention this, but you can always get a separate IP and dedicate it to that host name. I don't know why it costs money though (Dreamhost offers them for 4$/mo); it's not like we are running out of IP's or anything. (Well they say we are, but, yeah...) Maybe it's required to have a separate line and a modem to do this, but I am not really sure.

I know about the Host header, and I know it makes "virtual hosting" possible. I thought the hostname the server responds to for the updates site could only be a registered domain or something...

As a matter of fact, if I changed the configuration of the server a little, I could get it a dedicated IP for that, but it's pointless imo.

No, that's in the HTTP server's config. DNS and that are two totally different things.

Yeah it's pointless but wouldn't it be super epic if you could get 1.3.3.7 for it?

That'd probably require a server in Asia or the Pacific. The 1.*.*.* block was allocated to the APNIC around a year ago. The IP you mention doesn't appear to be in use yet, so go for it! :D

New URL: http://cs.rin.ru/updatesdb/

This just redirects. I recommend everyone to bookmark this. Should we ever have to change the adress again, you will always be able to reach the site with this link.

Yes. Last night ChrisTX was like "why is it still beta btw?". I was like "good question". So, yea.

I'm requesting better search functionality for the site, i.e. exact match and partial match.

So when I type in civilaztionv it will list all .ncf files containing the phrase civiliaztionv. Such as

civilaztionv-basecontent.ncf
civilaztionv-dlc1.ncf
civilaztionv-exe-demo.ncf
civilaztionv-sdk-beta.ncf

etc.
