Getting the "Invalid or corrupt texture materials/console/background01.vtf" error. I've installed HL2 (from german DVD image), extracted all (yes all except the securom one) .gcfs with GCFScape into a folder (as in Thals guide), pasted the bin folder from empV5 update. Trying to start the game = above mentioned error.

Then replaced the file with the one from cstrike\materials\console... then game starts up... intro video starts.. after that I see "Loading...", error message pops up: "The application or DLL d:\hl2\root\hl2\bin\server.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check against your installation diskette." When I try with launcher.exe game starts up,, video shows, then "Loading" and thats it - nothing ever happens. Game hangs. Yes I have created shortcut with -steam, tried with launcher.exe and ape fix (client.dll).

Anything I need to take care of ? Like order of extracting the gcfs... cause there are base bla bla and german bla bla..?

Also people keep replying "you have to unlock / decrypt" gcfs - remember I'm using the ones from retail DVD... anything special I need to do in order to *decrypt / unlock* them except extracting them with GCFScape?

HELP PLZ!!!
I've the same problem!

But when i start HL², there is the intro movie, then everything's black (black screen)
Plz help me!

how long u let it load? sometimes it seems to take forever

Well I did wait long enough I think... anyway I just found out after googling / reading all kind of forums and checking with my local files that:
Some of the gcfs are encrypted (the css ones seem to be not) so extracting them like mentioned in Thals guide is pointless :?
Thats why a lot of people are getting the invalid / corrupt background01.vtf error. So the question is can you decrypt them without connecting to steam? What happens with the original version - does steam decrypt the gcfs or unpacks them and decrypts during the process?

Does the version Thal used for his guide have some encrypted gcfs too or all *normal*?

does this mean my memory just went bad? i restarted my system turned off all unessacry programs and i still get it. i changed heapsize made my virtal memory huge (1gigs - 3 gigs) and i thought maby it was an option i set but there isn't a config.cfg file just the defult one(config_defult.cfg). any idea what i need to do?

edit it tried making a new account and reputing the blog file in the folder and editing the steamapp.cfg file and still no go, you guys sure thats the way to fix it cuzz it doesn't seem to work for me unless i missed somthing.

im using the version where you extract cfg's all to one folder than take the bin from cs source into it. launches fine. but ai_disable comes up so i type in the command he said. so then it seem fine but i cant get through checkpoints (gates) and the people seem to not finish their conversations. got an idea?

"Connection to Steam server lost. Could not acquire necessary game files"

This is the message I seem to be getting just after G-Man's introduction; it's also accompanied by a memory error, saying it could not write to certain address..etc. Pretty standard Windows error.

I'm running the launcher.exe, steamless, patchless version called HL2_UK

Tried applying various remedies: ai_fix, and whatever that was mentioned in the first post of this thread.

Any clue, guys?

First of all, people seem to be confused as how the downloading and unlocking progress works.
1. If you download off Steam, then they have to be unlocked, no exceptions. It will finish downloading, and then unlock. There will be a dialog, so you can see the progress of unlocking.
2. If you download anywhere else reputable (meaning links off this forum, or maybe Emporio's, too) they are already unlocked.
EDIT: Some more elaboration on unlocking: Unlocking means the files are encrypted. Being in a GCF does NOT count as encrypted. You can extract them and what not, but they will be inaccessible, hence, the background error. Think of GCF's as like a ZIP file. They only hold files. But don't be fooled into thinking they do compression. They don't. Maybe think of it like a filesystem instead, if you understand that.

Second, there was a small error I came across.
After extracting files from the GCF's (meaning I downloaded from steam) and applying the patched client.dll, and using steamengine.exe, I ran into problems. It would freeze when it was almost done loading. Don't do this. Use either/or. Use the patched dll by ape, or use a steam emulator (i.e. steamengine). Using both will possibly cause freezing when loading up a game (that includes starting a new game, w/e)
EDIT: I just remembered some other stuff. I also applied the bin folder from Emporio's CSS update 5. The game wouldn't even start without it. Anyway, another symptom was that when closing HL2, it'll give you a memory cannot be read error, at, if I remember, address 0x127800.

Also, if you get sound stuttering problems, or any stuttering problems at all, make sure you've used the -heapsize switch. First 3 numbers should be half of your avaliable memory in megabytes, then followed be 3 zeros (i.e., 256mb RAM, -heapsize 128000)
EDIT: I can't seem to make up my mind today. Anyway, the reason you have to use heapsize, opposed to not having to back in the HL1 engine, is because the Source engine doesn't detect your memory correctly, so it sets your cache to the default size (64mb, which is kinda horrible for default, what with the stuttering). This results in the game recaching new sounds whenever they appear, and kicking out old sounds, since there's only a minimal 64mb of cache. Using heapsize will increase that cache space, therefore removing stuttering. Of course, things need to be cached first, so there may be stuttering in the beginning, or once in awhile. Other than that, no.

OK, I think I'm going to make a second post, since my first one is getting large.

If possible, try not to use Steamengine.exe or any other steam emulator with HL2. It seems to cause more problems. Just use ape's patched client.dll. It fixes, most probably, whatever errors you have. Everything remains the same, except get any file that's not called hl2.exe out of that program folder. Folders don't count.

EDIT: And oh yes. Any non-steam or lansteam stuff, that counts as steam emulators. Only thing that should be in your HL2 folder, (other than the resource files it needs: bin, hl2,relists folders, and possible a cstrike folder) is a hl2.exe. Everything else should go somewhere else. I prefer the recycle bin.

EDIT: Sigh...I really can't make up my mind today. At least I'm not making double posts. Anyway, your shortcut should looks something like: "X:\PathToHalfLife2Folder\hl2.exe" -steam -console -heapsize 128000. I explained heapsize in the last post.
