2)copied the client.dll and engine.dll from v3

As stated before: Do NOT use the cracked engine.dll that's in the package. Just use the client.dll. That's an official client.dll and that's all you should need, because an original retail extraction requires no crack at all. Anyway, I can't troubleshoot this with you until I get my disc back and compare some of the file sizes.

Also, here's some more info from a post of mine from a year ago:
Quote:
The original SIDs from the disc don't contain ID#503 = Client Binary. Any Left 4 Dead client binary v3 or less will work with the ancient version of Left 4 Dead that comes from the retail disc. There's a link to a v3 client binary towards the bottom of the 1st post here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=50757
Make sure you copy client.dll to: Left 4 Dead\left4dead\bin\. Once that's there, you can run left4dead.exe no problem

@static Void
GCfeX crash phoenix when selected in instruments menù

Don't know why there's no music in L4D2

i found the same problem about music and sound in left 4 deead 1 check under.

BTW: cracked files can be included into a software like phoenix or iisn't good for the various crew?

@LordSte

I readed the topic inside your link, but seems that i need steam or steamup in order to play the game...and i'm searching a way in order to play left 4 dead 1 without any kind of steam client :\
maybe i need just to use client.dll v3 and revemu...i will give another try

And that's step by step what happened:
1)i extracted l4d1 from sis original dvd
Phoenix gives me these files:
Left 4 Dead binaries.ncf (i extracted this one)
left 4 dead base.ncf (extracted too)
left 4 dead sound.ncf (too)
left 4 dead french.ncf (skippeD)
left 4 dead German.ncf (skipped)
left 4 dead russian.ncf (skipped...sorry forum leaders)
left 4 dead spanish.ncf (skipped)
left 4 dead lv.ncf (skipped...i don't want low violence)

2)apply ONLY the client.dll v3 you gave me
3)apply revemu
4)run the game
5)IT WORKS ........BUT!!!! :

1)no sound 2)no music
3)console errors on start (with -console command)

(i have the file (for example) in my directory D:\L4D1\left4dead\sound\UI\gamestartup1.mp3 ....so why it doesn't recognize it?
that's the only problem with L4d1 i suppose...maybe a configuration of RevEmu?

if you help me i will give you as gift my full support and a cold beer

Ok, it seems you missed the reason why I supplied that link. That link is just to show you where to get the client.dll. ALL the information inside that link is 100% unrelated to the retail disc and what you are trying to do. So, disregard all the information there. Also, when I got it to work, I did it without RevEmu (or any other crack) so I don't know if that's the answer. I think you should stop frustrating yourself and wait for me to get my disc back tomorrow. It's very possible that the files from your disc are different and that's why you're getting problems when I didn't. Once we determine the difference, then we'll go from there.

Alright, got the disc back. Did everything that I remembered doing and it worked fine. I'll restate exactly what I did:
1.) Copied all .sis,.sim, and .sid files off the disc and into a folder on my hard drive.
2.) Installed Phoenix Launcher 1.2.1
3.) Launched the SID Unpacker within Phoenix
4.) Hit Scan a SIM-file, and selected Left 4 Dead Retail_disk1.sim.
5.) Selected the following (in the bottom window) to be extracted:
Left 4 Dead binaries.ncf
Left 4 Dead base.ncf
Left 4 Dead sound.ncf

6.) Hit Unpack. Made a folder somewhere called SteamSmells and unpacked to that folder.
7.) Exited Phoenix.
8.) Copied just the client.dll from the left_4_dead_client_binary_plus_engine_v3.rar package to my SteamSmells\left4dead\bin\ directory.
9.) Double-clicked SteamSmells\left4dead.exe to launch it. Started a Single-Player Game and it worked fine. I took a screenshot of the console window showing the version numbers within the window and at the top-right of the screen.

Here's another screenshot which shows the date and the file sizes of my SID/SIM/SIS files on the retail disc. Please compare these values to the files on your disc.

Also, I don't know if this helps but here are some more characteristics I took from my disc and box:
UPC: 014633098556
ISBN: 0-784544093
End of red text written along front side of disc, along the edge: Made in Mexico. 985507
Shiny Numbers on back inner-ring of the disc: (369256) 985507 02

Here's the MD5 hashes for the files on my disc, and some extracted files:
  1. 5C74E6BAD321F7DFC5143E2763F48864  Left 4 Dead Retail_disk1_0.sid

Or maybe the problem's that i've steam installed on my pc..

I put an image of the console here. In main menu there are a lot of errors and the engine recall the MatchMaking [L4DMM]

Have you downloaded and applied about 200 mb of updates (about 20 if 7z archived) for L4D2? You need it in order to play. Then apply Stryder's loader and try again.

maybe not...where i can found this update?
i've the 2.0.0.4 and it's about 13Mb nothing more...
...maybe i miss something, but i downloaded all of them from blackuser at viewtopic.php?f=10&t=54613
and there's nothing more than 13mb

static, i founded the problem for L4D1 audio:
i tried after long tryouts to make a shortcut inside of phoenix and run left4dead.exe
well, it works with audio and music.

At this point i thinked: "probably it's the revemu"
i copied the revemu inside left 4 dead 1 directory but nothing...it simply doesn't work.

After that...i changed (because inside phoenix the revemu default language of the ini's english) the language to italian
...well...if i set to italian the steam language the audio and music doesn't work!!Only subtitles are in italian (and it's right...in retail version registered with steam i've only italian subtitles and all the sound in english) but no sound. Strange but true.
So, in order to play L4D1 without anything (just extracting it with phoenix) i need a way to change the language from italian to english (it doesn't have any sense...but looks the only way where it works...)

BTW: Why it doesn't work with only italian subtitles....the subtitles didn't affect the audio and music isn't it?
: \ steam makes me insane........

First, it's very strange that the Steam AppID your game is using is 215 instead of 500.
215 = Source SDK Base Temporary ID, used to mount the Episode 1 engine in mods
500 = Left 4 Dead
Next, the matchmaking DLL was not present on older versions. It's supposed to be like this.
3rd, I have Windows 7 64-bit, but I booted into my XP 32-bit SP3 partition and it worked fine.
#4, If you try to update the game, then you will require RevEmu to play it. You probably know this by now, but you should not be using RevEmu with the old version from the retail disc (I've stated this many times). You keep mentioning it in your posts, and I don't know why...
Last, since you have the same exact disc, you're doing something extra or something wrong that you shouldn't be doing. You gotta find that.
One more thing, I have Steam installed on my computer too, so that's not the problem.

Post subject:  Re: Phoenix launcher 1.2.1 [22 NOV 2009]

aaah LordSte you give me a lot of things to think about it.

a little summary:
L4D1 works fine but without audio with the dll v3 you gave me.
I founded that the main problem (i don't know why) is based on subtitles and steamversion

I'll try to be more clear:
my game extracted and with v3 client, it works near perfectly, runs automatically with all the interface and menu text in italian but without any kind of sound or music
...i runned the game creating a shortcut inside the phoenix listbox and the game runs perfectly with sound and music but completly in english.
I saw that the playername (running it inside of phoenix) and is SteamPlayer (typically usage of RevEmu) so i thinked it worked with it
also i tried to change the revemu (inside of phoenix) in italian...and the game runs with italian subtitles and menu text but ever without sounds.

So we understand the problem: the language; but
1) how to change the language without revemu
2) why it can't work with the subtitles (in this case inside left 4 dead_it directory)

So right about now i'm trying to understand how i can change the subtitle text and interface text language (i'm thinking right now about the autoexec.cfg...need to try)

as you said is true: left 4 dead 1's steam AppId 500...i can't really understand why i've 215...
...i can also post a picture of the original dvd.

I ever talk about retail and emus only because i think i'm the only one who have the original game, registered on steam, but wants to create and find a way to install and play it without register it for all the people who hates the steam restriction.

You talk to me as if i'm a stupid, but i don't think to be it.
I talk ever about revemu only because "i'm trying" to understand the problem and i'm using all the ways i know.
Now i will try with regedit and changing the steam language from original steam client.

I want only to understand, probably you also play the game without problem with subtitles and menu texts in english.

My objective's to create a standalone update for all the people who bought the orignal game but doesn't want to use steam.
I downloaded the skullptura release before, i like the game, i bought it. But that doesn't mean i want to ruin my life using steam and see Ads everywhere. Also why if i'm a pc user i need to bought two copy of the game in order to play with a friend but the console version can do it initially without any console command?

I'm just a normal user who bought the games but don't want to be restricted to "internet" conditions...also the "insert Dvd" or other stuff like these. If you search on youtube some gameplay video there are thousand xbox videos where the authors says without problems "iso downloaded from" and the press point us as pirates and the market's dying because of us.

BTW: where are you from? If your language is different from english do you want to help the phoenix team with translations?

Post subject:  Re: Phoenix launcher 1.2.1 [22 NOV 2009]

I just have to ask.. Why do you want to run the old L4D version?
The game have been updated many many times since release, so.. why?

And if pirating didnt exist game developers wouldnt have any need to put a drm on their games, thats just how it is.
Nowadays the drm is more for a way to keep people from downloading all the games and get all content without problems.
If you really want the full game you normally get it.
Its like the door. We have locks to keep people from going in, but its really easy to just smash open a windows and go in.
I wish I knew english fluent, would be so much easier to explain what I mean.

Post subject:  Re: Phoenix launcher 1.2.1 [22 NOV 2009]

I actually have only originals game. i just don't approve the anti-piracy system of steam.
The online checks, securom check, dvd checks.

If i was able to find and apply the updates for Left 4 Dead 1 i will do it for sure, but right about now's right also being able to run the extracted version 1.0.0.0

I'm searching for the updates, but i need a cumulative patch and it's hard to find all the files up to date.

I remember the piracy at the time of Commodore 64 (my first love), but right about now the pc market's the most penalized with anti-piracy measures.
