Alright, I'm not sure if anyone can help me but my problem is a slightly confusing one.. I probably didn't do any of this the right way. So I downloaded all the files from this thread along with CF Toolbox and the files I needed there. Cracked Steam with SMD. Ran SMD.bat saw Left 4 Dead under my games saying ready to install. Then I had the same problem as everyone else where it said server is too busy to handle your request. Then I just tried running the L4D.exe and the game started up just fine. I can play No Mercy just fine but it seems to have crashed on other campaigns but that might've just been my PC acting up.. I only tried once. I tried to play a multiplayer match and it said I need to have Steam opened. So I ran regular steam but then I couldn't even run a single player campaign (the console kept saying something along the lines of "Failed to validate account"). I ran the cracked steam and now I could play single player again under my user name but when I try to connect to a game it will just show the lobby for a split second and take me back to the menu. I'm probably missing something completely obvious. Anyone care to help?

Just out of curiousity, the engine.dll in the "left_4_dead_client_binary_plus_engine_v3" comes out dated as (type 'version' in console):
Exe build: 14:12:44 Dec 3 2008 (3679) (500)
and the current one is:
Exe build: 11:22:29 Dec 5 2008 (3681) (500)
Will there be a crack update to this engine.dll version? Because the Dec 3 one I can still kill the witch from behind, etc. Btw I am using the undead patch and the "left_4_dead_client_binary_plus_engine_v3". I updated steam by deleting steam.cfg, and then reapplying undead patch, and then installing the new client and engine, and it works perfect no problems so far. Just a minor nitpicking about the newer engine.dll hehe. I have the dec 5th engine.dll if anyone wants to have a look at it, but I am sure you guys already have it
PS - with this new update I can once again launch l4d from the steam shortcut created on desktop. Usually I have to launch from left4dead.exe

Oh one more last thing. I have successfully managed to get people from the lan, hamachi, and internet all to connect at one time (which is totally awesome), but I was wondering, I know my server probably won't appear in the "Internet" tab from openserverbrowser (it certainly does show under the "Lan" tab), but will it show in custom? Is there a custom tag that my server shows under, or is there something in my server.cfg that's the problem?

Update: My dedicated server is currently experiencing crashes with the engine.dll included in "left_4_dead_client_binary_plus_engine_v3". Can anyone confirm this with their servers? Is there a workaround or another alternative engine.dll I can use? I had to revert to Stryder's dll to stop the crashes.

Nevermind, I fixed my sound ncf problem,. just watch out for the rapidspread links ( 2nd mirrors ), they might download a corrupted copy of the sound content rars. { Some par2 files would help *Hint* }

Might want to add another step between 1 & 2 where it helps if you tell steam to install L4D and let it fail with the "server is too busy" error. Then continue on with step 2 and so on... ( for those that are new to steam )

Done all the steps, start the game but it closes to the desktop when it gets to the menu. Help please!!

so what is the actual method / how to get L4D to install?
Have downloaded the 6 rar-parts and need "left 4 dead base.nfc" & "left 4 dead binaries.nfc" as well.
The v3 crack seems to be outdated, get the same problem with Steam: <Server too busy>.
Tried all possible things! : /

(Don't need the latest version of this game, just wanna see it)

Complete directions that worked for me ( filling in the gaps )

** Steam has to be up-to-date to be able to update L4D **
All file links needed are on page 1

1.  Follow step 1, Install steam and crack it with Undead patch or SMD
 
2.  Download the sound content files from mirrors ( I recommend using a mix of mirrors 1 and 3 )
 
3.  Same as page 1, download left_4_dead_client_binary_plus_engine_v3
 
4.  Log onto cracked steam, scroll down to Left 4 Dead on games list, right click and pick "install game".
Follow the prompts as if you were installing it for real and it will reach the point where it wants to download and it will fail.
"Steam servers are too busy " , ect.. this is normal.  Close the warning box and close steam.
 
5.  Extract the "left_4_dead_client_binary_plus_engine_v3" to your steam\steamapps folder and let it overwrite any files if necessary.
 
6.  Extract the left.4.dead.Sound.Files.v2.Content rar archive ( made up of the 6 rars ) to a temp folder first.  When you extract it, it creates a folder called "left.4.dead.Sound.Files.v2.Content" which we don't need.  Inside that folder is two .ncf files and a common folder, COPY and paste those into your steam\steamapps folder and let it overwrite any files if necessary.  Do not delete this temp folder yet, you will need it in a later step.
 
** If winrar gives you warnings during extraction, don't ignore them ! ,. you have a bad rar in your set, you have to re-download it. **
 
7.  Fire up cracked steam again and now steam should start updating your copy of L4D.  If nothing happens, try right clicking on left 4 dead on the list and tell it to "pause updating" , then do it again and tell it to "resume updating".  Eventually it will get to 100% and move L4D up onto the top section of steam, indicating its ready to go, but it's not yet.
 
8.  Close steam down again,.. grab CF Toolbox ( link on first page ).  Start CF toolbox and configure it,. .( go to preferences and fill in your cracked steam login info ).  On the first tab, it will probably tell you that most of your L4D files are 100% , but not the sound ncf and maybe not the client binary ncf.  Close CF Toolbox.
 
9.  Fixing your files, simple, follow steps 5 & 6 and re-extract those files into your steamapps folder and overwrite the current ones.  In the case of step 6, if you still have that temp folder, simply copy and paste as you did before to the steamapps folder.  If not, follow step 6 as it is, but you don't need to keep the temp folder. If any other L4D ncfs aren't 100%, you can try to update them with CF Toolbox, but it doesn't work on all of them.
 
10.  Verify your files again,.. open CF Toolbox and hopefully you have all 100% on your L4D files.
 
11.  Launching L4D ,  it may work through the steam client, but I don't really recommend it at this time.  Its better to find the left4dead.exe in the steamapps\common\left 4 dead folder. Create a shortcut of this file and put it where you want.  Right click the shortcut > properties , in the Target box you will see the path to left4dead.exe in quotes.  Go to the end of that line, put in a space and then paste this :

Hit ok, and then the shortcut is ready.  Go ahead and launch it.
Single player game will work fine, but for starting a multiplayer game , see the link below in step 13.
 
 
12. ( Optional ) L4D is not actually tied to steam, you can move the entire "left 4 dead" folder wherever you want, but you'll have to update your shortcut path if you are using one.   I'm only mentioning this because after I've had all the files at 100% and then logged onto steam afterwards; steam tries to update the files and either mistakingly or intentionally screws with your sound files and / or the client binary file.  They are no longer 100% after that, so I recommend you move it out of the steamapps common folder once you're up and running.  If you need to update down the road, I'm sure better methods or safer ways to update it will be available and you can move everything back.

-Deleted *.blog-files and the .cfg to get the latest SteamUpdate.
-UndeadPatched
-Extracted the 6 rars into ~/steamapps (common-folder and the two .ncf-files)
-Extracted and overwritten with "left_4_dead_client_binary_plus_engine_v3"-files.
-Startet my Steam again...(Step 7) and... nothing. L4D is still in my 'not-installed'-list.

(Counter-Strike Source, Portal, HL2.. and so on, works fine)

Any ideas?

Yes, deleting both .blob files is a good idea , especially if you've updated steam.

Did you do what I said in step 4 ? .. if it still doesn't show up in your "installed games" section, you could try extracting the files in steps 5 & 6 and then start steam. At that point jump back to step 4 and continue on and do steps 5 & 6 again as well as the rest of the steps.

Yes, there is a full copy floating around,.. there is a skidrow release in the usual torrent places as well as a link to a steam torrent copy > follow the link on step 13.

Steam may not be allowing L4D to be downloaded if they are detecting this modified / older set (v3) of dll files or the client binary, unless someone wants to confirm this method still works at this time. If that is the case,.. we might have to wait for the next set of those files to be released.

I have the same problem. But when i run it from the .exe file without steam open, it runs fine.
