"Connection failed after 10 retries" = Ports are blocked, you are blocked by router or firewall.

I dont think so. Because this problem has occured today. Yesterday me and 2 my friends (anybody have different internet provider) we can't connect. So i think that this is Valve work.

I'm sorry to say, but no matter how you roll the the dice, the problem ends up being on your end. It is (as as been mentioned) most likely the ports being closed. Other things on your computer can cause these things, maybe a anti-virus, or an actual virus...

After doing a bit of messing around with my dedicated server it seems the client timed out error is caused by having VAC enabled.

Really? So it works without vac2 enabled? Have you been able to have others join? If that's the case, I'll update my guide with this information.

OK, now I got it to work with skidrow.

Follow these instructions:
1.install skidrow
2.place launch.exe in the right place
3.DON'T start steam
4.start launch.exe
5.in the console enter "map xxx"

Okay, very fine. I see the voting system works ingame.
But I somehow can't bring up the console ingame... I hit the ^ [=tilde] key, but it does not work.

And: Is there any chance to choose your character?
Other than that it runs alright and does not crash.

Yeah I've had about 3 or 4 people on my server now they don't seem to be having any problems.

Can you get your server to display on the server browser?

Trying to figure out how, so far haven't seen any and nobody has seen mine, even though connecting is fine.

Where do I get the launch.exe?

Launch.exe is no longer included, use left 4 dead.bat instead

I see a lot of people having trouble getting dedicated servers to work, but the moderators here close down the specific threads before I can answer. Hopefully those people with problems look at this thread. This is how I play Left 4 Dead online with my buddies who play without Steam AND/OR my buddies who play legit with legit Steam:

1.) Install game on client machines (duh).

2.) Install Left 4 Dead dedicated server (Win32) onto server machine using HLDSUpdateTool:
HldsUpdateTool.exe -command update -game left4dead -dir .
Don't forget the period at the end!

3.) Rename the original engine.dll to engine.bak (just incase you need it later) and use Stryder's engine.dll in its place on both the server and client machines. Legit clients don't need to do this step and they'll still be able to connect to a Stryder engine.dll server. The engine.dll is at the bottom of page 1 in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=50800&start=0

4.) On server machine, make a text file in l4d/left4dead/cfg. You can customize your server by adding commands in here. Use this PDF for possible commands: http://www.left4dead411.com/l4d_cvar_list.pdf
This is what mine looks like:
hostname "My Left 4 Dead Server!"
rcon_password "heyhey"
sv_lan 0
z_difficulty Impossible
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0

The only things you should change from here are hostname, rcon_password, and z_difficulty. The other 2 have to be the way they are. Look in the PDF for more info on this. I'm too lazy to explain them right now. Rename this text file to server.cfg.

5.) Now you have to make sure that port 27015 for both UDP (needed for server) and TCP (needed for rcon commands) are forwarded through your router/firewall to the server computer. You're on your own there.

6.) On the server machine, navigate to the server folder where srcds.exe is located. Here I made a batch file with the following:
srcds.exe -console -game left4dead -maxplayers 4 -nomaster +map l4d_hospital01_apartment
I never tried it without -nomaster, but you can give it a go if you want. I have it like that mainly because I only want my friends to play and don't want random people to join. You can also start with a different map if you like. All possible maps are in the left4dead/maps folder. They end in .BSP

7.) On client machines, you should load the game with this batch file:
hl2.exe -game left4dead -console
The console will pop up right after the game loads. You type this in the console:
connect xx.xx.xx.xx
where the xx.xx.xx.xx equals the internet IP address of the server machine. If you don't know this, use the server machine to go to http://www.whatismyip.com. That ip address is the one you use. Legit users can launch the game using Steam. Then they have to activate the "Developer Console" in the Keyboard/Mouse options. They can press the ~ key to bring it down after it's enabled and then type the same connect command above.

8.) To change levels without shutting down and activating the server again, this is what you do while in the game on any client machine:
Bring down console and type
rcon_password "the password you put in the server.cfg file"
rcon changelevel mapname

This works great for me. My buddies and I playes for 3 hours last night with no errors and no noticable lag. I was running the server with a cable connection and an older AMD64 computer. Good luck!
