Using Process Monitor For Fixing L4D2 Crashes

Many users complain about crashes of L4D2 while they are playing. The most common reason for that are the missing registries that when the game don't find, it crashes to desktop. Before continuing reading this manual make sure you have the latest registry fix from http://www.mediafire.com/?odqf2ckzymu. If you still have crashes then read bellow for how you can use Process Monitor to find those missing registries and register them manually.

1. Download Process Monitor from http://live.sysinternals.com/Procmon.exe

2. Run Process Monitor and uncheck the "Show File System Activity", the "Show Network Activity" and the "Show Profiling Events" like the picture bellow

3. Press Ctrl + L and on the Filters window press the Reset button.

4. On the "Display entries matching these conditions" put
<Process Name> <is> <left4dead2.exe> then <Include>
and press the Add button.

5. Press OK and open Left 4 Dead 2 and play until is crashed.

6. When the game crashes, go back to Process Monitor. Go to the end of the Log and then then scroll up until you find on the Operation tab for a lot of "Thread Exit" commands like the picture bellow
Image

7. Before the first "Thread Exit" command you will see the registry that is missing.

8. Right click on it, select Properties and copy the Path.

9. Now let's register the missing registry entry. Open Notepad. On the first line write

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

and on the second line paste the path you copied before inside [].
Now change the first word of the path like this

HKCR --> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HKCU --> HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKLM --> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKU --> HKEY_USERS

example:
[HKCR\CLSID\{8D083C4F-F8B1-42ED-851B-51017CF4C161}]
change it to
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8D083C4F-F8B1-42ED-851B-51017CF4C161}]
Image

10. Go File --> Save As. On the "File name:" write regfix.reg and on the "Save as type:" select "All Files". Then open the saved registry to add the entries.

11. Play again the game. If it crashes search again with Process Monitor for other missing registry keys.

I hope this guide will help you to play L4D2 with no crashes.

But I even don't think that this will work ..... if left4dead2.exe is trying to read the registry value from those registry files, it should be trying to read something useful rather then reading something useless or empty.

In the example I removed a registry that was needed by the game and the game crashed. After putting back the registry the game worked perfectly. The registry was empty.

With this registry fix a friend of mine could launch the game for the first time. With every crack we tested the game just crashed after the intro but now it works ::D

Its definitely a reason for CTDs but it's not a good solution to make this for every PC. It would be nice if someone of the crackers is able to remove this stuff so that no registry fix is required.

You should try to run the program with administrator access right.

If you want, save a log of the crash and attach it here to check it.
