Strangely the game doesn't work anymore.
Correct me if i do something wrong:
1.Extract from Retail Dvd all the files with sisInstall or Phoenix
2.Put client.dll inside (for example) C:\L4D\left4dead\bin
3.run the game (as far i know: a fresh install from the retail dvd doesn't need any special thing and doesn't need also Steam)

Current problem:
i can only see the intro...after that CTD.
I tried to run the game with -novid
An error message happear "error loading client library" or similar.

Any clues? Maybe i need to use regedit in order to change/add something?

I had a wrong client.dll, the one provided by sam works well and the game runs like a charm!

I think RevEmu was (is) updated for the latest Left 4 Dead, not the version you are trying to run.

it was on rev-crew's website, but their website has been dead for several weeks, now it's partially back on, but only the forum is running, so I can't provide any link for the cracked EXE. anyway, you can grab it from any L4D1 nosteam release, it should be the same EXE...

You mean i need an old revemu in order to make the game run without any update of it installed?
the last version i have's the 9-8-3.

I need to find maybe an old client.
Actually the file i have's clientv2008 (really dunno if it's the "famous" v3 or what else).

Actually if i remember well: in past the game works with only the client.dll without steam (everything extracted from reatail original dvd) and also without revemu.

So if, and i underline it IF, i remember well, the only problem with the game can be:
1.I registered the original game with my steam and this thing maybe put something inside windows registry
2.I extracted from sis.sid.sim in a wrong way: actually in the main directory i have only the left4dead.exe (and this sounds strange) and i putted the client.bin inside L4D\left4dead\bin (the others files inside the directory are a server.dll and another file).

Actually i extracted only the binaries, sounds and base (i avoided to extract the various languages and the LowViolence content); i merged all the contents inside one directory but the game still crash after intro (i can just see for a couple of seconds the loading screen "the one before the main menù").

This thing will make me crazy

running the game with -novid -window it say something about "client library".

This thing sounds weird. Maybe i need a small update of the game and not trying to run the 1.0.0.0 version.

Nothing. the Exe doesn't work, game still crash after intro movie. Looks like there are some missing files or something about regedit.

Any clue?

Maybe i need a specific version of RevEmu? <--impossible, the game doesn't ask me for steam (this thing happend only with v1.0.0.0 of the game)

Left 4 Dead doesn't have CEG,you don't need any client.dll,that's Left 4 Dead 2...

If you have the .sim .sis .sid files, can you try to extract them binary, sound and base packages and apply your client.dll?

I still don't understand why the game crashes after the intro and tell me about the client library. It worked in past. Looks like if the game isn't fully extracted. I really can't understand. I need just to play single player alone with original dvd and without internet.

It's true partially, the original dvds have only the binary, sound and base package (the missed one's client library)

I really begin to think that's a CDR problem.
Seems like there's some missing files or similar... If somebody can extract l4d 1 from sis sid sim and be able (without any update) to play it please write something here.

The 1.0.0.0 only because's the most fast way to play the game. I just remembered about the campaign about the cornmill and i wanted to replay it.
Right about now i have both left 4 dead original, but i don't have the time and the "fast" bandwidth connection in order to Download the last patch about left 4 dead 1 (the one with the sacrifice).

In past times i played left 4 dead 1 from version 1.0.0.0 (just adding the client.dll and also this release doesn't need steam at all).
The last time i patched the game was for crash course, but i lost the patch file and now i can't find it nowhere.

Basically also, i just hate all the things which ask for end-users an internet connection or a third party software.
It's weird, maybe i'm only nostalgic about old apogee games (shareware and not)

There's something missing for sure: i can hear the music in the main menù but the screen's all black (also i can hear, using the mouse, the various "click" inside the menù).

So now's the time to discover what will not allow me to see the graphic inside the menù

If somebody have also a very old patch (i don't know: nor more than 100mb) i will appreciate it.
Maybe there's some missing .pak or gfx?

I will try right about now to extract the game again and i will apply only the engine.dll and client.dll from sam release (maybe with these things it will work)

Only a question: there's a way to add or change the language about subtitles in games like Left4Dead etc...? (obviously without steam).

What's to add in HKEY_LOCALUSER (in winreg) ?
