Post subject:  Hypocrisy

Hello everyone.

I wanted to make people notice (and by the same occasion figure out if I'm correct on my thoughts or not) that there is alot of hypocrisy about actually buying games or not. To, first of all, state things clear: I buy my multiplayer games, so I'm not gonna defend the pirates, neither cheer up the buyers.

About my point, so, I read a bit this forum and saw alot of people talking about buying games, nearly forcing people to (should I remind the theme of this website ?), pretending "that piracy is for trying games and if you really like it just buy it" (I'm half ok with that sentence), when beside that sentence, they promote piracy in their signatures for games like L4D, Counter Strike, TF2, etc which are undubitabely good games that do not need to be "tried" before purchasing, and even if you had to try, why would there be such organization to maintain latest versions etc, I mean: this is fucking epic piracy and you guys ask people not to pirate games ?

What the fuck with those hypocrites ?

I pirate some games, I buy others (TF2, CSS, BFBC2, L4D, MoH, CoD:MW2 to only quote those ones) but when I come on a pirate website it's not to pretend to educate people or tell them what to do of their life or money.

Some guys here should start caring a bit more about themselves than about others personal wills and intentions.

Just an opinion.

The world is full of hypocrites,so why not teh internets?
I understand your problem, but that's not enough of an argument for me to get your point.
I personally "forced" people to buy games, becuase I can see that they can't get around all of the complicated procedures required to make a game work properly,or work at all,but with serious problems and missing features. Now I wouldn't really care,I'm a pirate, but I do intend on buying some games that I've got my eye on and would really like to own them "legally".

You're right, I also read more often that people suggest to just buy the game. As source_engine said, this is a result of Steam's success: Pirating games on Steam has become quite a hassle. You need to try a lot of stuff, read dozens of thread pages on the forum and hope someone was kind enough to put up with creating some sort of crack. I have to admit that when I wanted to play Magicka with a friend, I went ahead and bought it. When you're into all this in the sense that you actively try to make games work and that you know how all the tools, cracks and emulators work (like I once did), you can use that to make stuff work. But if you have to get into it first and/or if you don't know that much about computers, buying a game for just 10€ is an actual alternative. I mean even if you know your way around as "much" as I do in my position, given the experience I should have due to that position, even then digging for information and trying to get games work is just a pain in the ass.

So when you see someone being told to "just buy the game", it's probably because unfortunately, it's the easiest thing to do. Making this complex and ever-changing non-Steam stuff accessible to everyone and easy to use requires manpower that just can't come from nowhere. And since things started being different for each new game, there's not really much of chance to maintain generalized up-to-date tutorials either.

What can be done though is maintaining projects like the ones in the releases section, sharing technical knowledge in the developer section and uploading game content like in the steam content sharing section - and I think we're rather successful at that, hence we focus on it.

Thank you for proving my point. And I completely agree with you, perhaps I would do the same if I could use electronic money.
The real trouble that I see and understood from your post is that, with so many games and so many diverse forms of "DRM",there's probably no way that we as a community can keep up.By "DRM" I mean stuff, content or whatever in the game gets in the way of the cracking process, not just the every day retail disk DRM we're used to seeing.
I personally like that Steam does exactly what it's supposed to do,it does it well and evolves with each day.And yet it also functions as a DRM system without the legal consumer knowing it or at least witnessing it.This "DRM" I would approve any day, even as a pirate, becuase I see that people are enjoying for what they payed their hard earned cash.
