1.edit your H:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\User\Half-Life 2 Deathmatch\steamenue.ini
to this :

make sure you are running your steam and logged in !
leave steam minisized !
and run your shortcut !
if you donot log in steam ,it will show this as you posted :
I can join in servers ,although I donnot know what 's the server's language  this is my Image :

Cert. length error is something you'll get if you are using older (pre 2.0) emu version. Make sure you are up to date with that.
If you are trying to play via steam, make sure client is running/logged in and your steamemu.ini got needed information for login.
P.S. Separate emu is not needed to play HL:S

Ok, so if I have the DVD, to I still need the protocol v7 patch if I download this patch instead? What steps are taken now then? Install HL2 DVD, download gcf's through steam (all three) put them in their respective folders in your file I just downloaded then run the patch, and the three installers and modify the steam~.ini. Correct? Am I missing something? Do I need to run both patches? Actually, what is the gcf I need that isn't fully download ? the deathmatch file?

try again or make sure your steam name and password in the [steamenu.ini] are the sane as you log in !
