Last night, I tried your ver 1.1 release, and created a local server with "New Game". After than, press ESC and click on "Find Servers", then click on the "Lan" tab, there is nothing there either. So, it looks the problem exists for both 1.1 and 1.2 release.

What is the root cause of this problem, Fasi?

Even after turning off Windows Firewall, I still can't see the game server (created from "New Game") in the Lab tab. Actually, it is not necessary to turn off Windows Firewall, because hl.exe has already been added into the exception list of the firewall. I have tested both ver 1.1 and 1.2, all having this problem.

Looks like another player named "Strato" in this thread (page 2 and 3) had the same problem as I do. Later he tried your release in another Lan, and the problem disappeared. So it is possible that the lan environment has some bearing on the problem.

In my testing, I don't have a Lan actually. I am using a cable network service. So I don't know if it really is a problem at all. Strato's testing is against ver 1.0 release (last April), but I don't keep a copy of that release. So no way to test it further.

If possible, could you test it over in your lan environment to see whether a game server created by "New Game" can show in the Lan tab, Fasi?

In ver 1.0 and 1.1 LAN tab works fine. This problem is only in ver 1.2 and will be solved in ver 1.3.

Server will be visible in LAN if you have private IP address and you are on same subnet. e.g
10.0.0.0/8
172.16.0.0/12
192.168.0.0/16

Thanks for your verification, Fasi! Glad that nothing wrong with ver 1.1 release. :)

By the way, what does that mean by these three lines?
10.0.0.0/8
172.16.0.0/12
192.168.0.0/16

Could you elaborate a bit more? My knowledge on network ip addresses is not that good.

They're IP blocks in CIDR notation. 10.0.0.0/8 is any address starting with 10, 172.16.0.0/12 means anything from 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255, and 192.168.0.0/16 is any IP that starts with 192.168.

By the way, how to check if I have private IP address and I am on same subnet so that I can see the server under the LAN tab? Is there any easy way to check this in Windows XP? Sorry for the dumb question.

Sure. Just go to Network Connections in the control panel, double-click on your connection's name, and go to the details tab. You will find your IP address and subnet mask (among other data) there. Alternatively, you can go to Start -> Run, type cmd /k ipconfig, and press OK. A command prompt window with the same information will appear.

Network configuration is fine and server should be visible.
Run Half-Life dedicated server and check if it is visible in LAN tab.

I ran my test by starting a local game server with "New Game" in the menu. After that, I pressed Esc and clicked on "Find Servers", Lan tab, to see whether the created local server is visible there. I am wondering if it is expected that I can't see the game server created by myself in the Lan tab. Maybe it is only visible by other computers other than the server (but I don't have two computers, so no way to test this guessing). Is my understanding correct? What's your method of testing with ver 1.1 release, Fasi?

Anyway, I'll follow your advice and test with running the dedicated server to see whether it works tonight.

Tried again, can't see my own server in Lan created by "New Game". Double-clicked the desktop icon of "CS Dedicated Server", it says "Your server is out of date. Please update and restart."

That's Valve's Masterserver fault I hope it will be fixed soon.

Just ignore this error run CS dedicated server and then run game. Now check if server shows under LAN tab.

Yup, I ignored this error, just let the console window be there, even though there is such error. Then I run the client, and still can't find the server under the LAN tab.

I guess this problem is more or less with my network environment. But you say my network configuration is fine...

Do you need more information about my network so that you can find out the root cause?
