can anyone help me with dvds? what iwant is to be able to convert it into a stand alone file like an mpeg or avi or whatever from an actual dvd is that possible?

hehe i suggest you find a good program and a popular one (lets say a trial) then look around ares bearshare and torrentspy and im sure youll be able to find the program.

I wouldn't recommend using programs that does everything for you coz they usually are pootimized  Means the quality is shit compared to what it would have been if you did it yourself.
If you are gonna encode it into Xvid or something like that go for matroska. Avi is outdated and really have no other advantages than it's well known. Matroska is a newer container and allows you to add "Real subtitles" and chapters and everything a DVD has. And best of all is that it naitively supports ogg. OGG is for those who doesn't know like mp3 but better.
