I believe it is Vista SP2 OEM.
If it's OEM, good luck, because each OEM manufacturer got a special DVD. Chances to get the right ISO are rather low. Instead, you should inquire your computer manufacturer after a new installation DVD. Usually you can get these for low fees.

The computer starts up normally until you see a black screen with the mouse. That's all you get.
Try booting in safe mode.

I could reset the computer of course. Bu there is a subscription of Norton Anti Virus on the laptops hard drive. Is it possible to back-up the subscription and move it to the new Windows Installation?
I can attach the laptop's hard drive into my desktop as secondary HDD. But I cant access its registry of course. So how you backup a subscription which has a 3-time installation limit? (which is the very reason I dont use anti viruses in first place)
Windows Recovery Environment ( which can be found on the Windows DVD or is optionally available as customizable stand-alone image in Windows Automated Installation Kit ) can be used to access the registry of an offline computer.
