Kaspersky 2009 is somewhat old. You might want to upgrade to KAV 2011.

Try Safe Mode. That should help.

Boot from the mini XP in Hiren's Boot CD and run a newer antivirus program from there, that should do.

Well get rid of Kaspersky 2009. At least get a free anti virus like avast instead. Avg is also good, but I prefer Avast for compatability with my defragger.

Go in safe mode and remove it yourself. Make sure you check BootExecute, Run, RunOnce etc in registry as well. make sure to check everything.

AVG is crap. Avast! is ... well not good either.

As far as AVs are concerned, it only makes sense to get a scanner backed by a massive commercial company. Read: Microsoft Security Essentials ( backed by MS FEP for enterprise customers ), Kaspersky ( backed by a broad range of enterprise products ), Norton ( Symantec Endpoint Protection, et al. ).

Any AV solely targeting the non-commercial audience can be said to be crap. Simple as that, it is.

Norton has failed users a LOT from my own experiences in PC repair. Customers bring in PCs infected with spyware/adware and they had Norton on their PC. So much for a "Good" protection.

But then again, that's often the same kind of people that think simply installing an antivirus program will give their computer everlasting, impenetrable protection against viruses. :D

Most modern programs probably automatically update their definitions and such, though...

Personally, I do fine with the old NOD32 in my desktop PC, and my laptop doesn't even run an antivirus program. I'm ultra-careful with what I run there, and pays off. ::)

Norton wouldn't be my personal favorite either, but tests show that these commercial AVs (specifically RAP tests, ie. from AV comparatives) have the best detections. Norton fails from my personal experience at detecting important viruses, not many though.
I am also not on the current on how Norton detects spyware/adware. I personally recommend virus squashing using DaRT and a manual look-through. However, you can boundle whatever AV you like I suppose.

I totally agree. I am using MSE for a few days and it really rocks. It detected 2 different viruses on my two computers.
Avast and Avira didn't detect them.

I also use MSE. Can't remember any false positives so far, and it scans really fast.

I would not recommend that. It is common that people tell you "ZOMG USE COMMON SENSE DOH", but it really isn't like that. AVs nowadays also detect exploits, intrusions and all kinds of things. Local file exploits - PDF? Flash? ecetera - are not determinable by some "common sense". MSE v2 (v1 was somewhat slow, tbh) is nowadays fast, silent and free. I would recommend running an AV for the sake of such attacks. Browser exploits can also be caught. Ok, Acrobat X, IE7+, and Chrome (work in progress) got sandboxes nowadays, so it's not so likely to be attacked by that anymore. Still, especially if you download files of the internet that could contain non-trusted binaries, possibly silently boundling malware makes having an AV only a reasonable thing.

Mostly, exploit detections are faster available than a fix. Therefore, an AV can protect before an update is released to address the issue(s).

Also, MS FEP here (you know the logo looks cooler? :D ), but it's the same as MSE, basically.

That's totally right, and therefore the reason I still run NOD32 on my desktop. It's not like I'm overconfident on me not doing anything stupid, as everyone makes mistakes, and also there are things that can get past this kind of common sense, as you said. It's just that the laptop's specs aren't amazing, so (despite NOD and others using very little processing power) I wanted minimal resource usage to be able to do my tasks as fast as possible. Battery duration is also a concern as I'm not always near a power socket.

I test all the illegally downloaded software inside a sandbox before I run it elsewhere. :D

On a sidenote, what do you think about VIPRE? Personally, I hadn't even heard of it until a friend told me he was using that. I visited their homepage, and they claim to be a very effective solution that requires little CPU and RAM, apparently delivering as promised (at least that's what he told me).

While we're at it - does anyone hae experience with software like these:

DefenseWall - http://www.softsphere.com/
ThreatFire - http://www.threatfire.com/

I think some sticky at WBB recommended them once. They are supposed to support normal anti virus programs with some other approaches.
Their claim seems a bit outdated to me, as today's AVs also have a lot of heuristic detection, don't they?

ThreatFire is so credible that they can make up percentage values on how they protect you more. Nobody knows what values these are, but ok. And yes, AVs do have heuristic detection, too. Still the time frame between a signature release and virus release is for MSE for instance known to be like 12 hours. No virus spreads that fast - no matter how many zero day holes it has - to make a difference here.

And DefenseWall, oh please. That's like present in ZoneAlarm since like 2000 ? Still, pointless as it won't help much, over that.
