Post subject:  Windows 7 USB setup not working

I have a Windows 7 SP1 ISO that I converted to USB. The PC boots off the USB drive, but it won't load the setup. Instead, I get a command prompt. I tried to manually run the setup file but it won't load.

How did you copy the files to your USB device? when I do this I use this:

Quote:
xcopy G:\*.*/s/e/f J:\

G:\ is the mounted iso and J:\ is the USB.

I don't want to use the Microsoft installer since I modified the WIM and removed the CFG file. I want to have an All in One USB Drive.

Your ISO might be corrupt. If it isn't, WUDT might work. If it doesn't, try Universal USB Installer.

I think you're pretty much fucked. When I tried to do sth like that I always ended up with either "Setup not working" or bootloader errors.
If you used a method similar to Option Two here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24 ... reate.html , and the setup is not working, it seems like the setup program has built-in file integrity checking (or the NTFS bootloader is crappy).

One solution I just found that may work (provided that you have a bootable ISO with working setup, tested for example in a VM):
http://www.supergrubdisk.org/wiki/Loopback.cfg

Or try this program: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multi ... b-creator/
EDIT:
Shaman posted the right version - the one I posted is intended for multiboot projects.

I do this, always works:

The diskpart part of this: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24 ... reate.html (what iceape linked)

then xcopy like Steam006 described,
and then

X:\boot> bootsect /nt60 X: /mbr

X being the usb stick.

That's not a problem, WUDT will work nevertheless. WUDT doesn't care about the exact media's contents, it copies them over simply. Moreover, modifying the WIM is supported; deleting ei.cfg equals the situation as-is on Windows Server 2008 R2, which doesn't come with such.

This is very likely why it doesn't work, yes. However, WUDT is the supported and automatized way, why jacking around it yourself, unless necessary (i.e. in the case of you wanting to install Windows from a partition on the local hard drive in which you might want to copy the installer files to it and boot them).
