| Post subject: | Fried soundcard channel - what to expect next? |
I had an unpleasant event just minutes ago - while playing on my PC I had to move away from it to lock the door and when I came back and touched my right headphone it zapped me with considerable force Now I have a question - will it work OK from now on (if I stay discharged) or should I expect the unexpected and not be suprised if my MB starts acting like being on an electric chair? And also - how can I prevent sth like this from happening again (with regards to not only my headphones) besides touching my apartment heater every time I sit on my PC? EDIT: Additional info #1: I'm 90% sure it was a static electrical discharge 'cause I literally scraped the floor with my flippers Additional info #2: After 2 hours of using the PC my headphones started to pound and screech silently while nothing played. I replugged them to the damaged socket and the right one began to emanate sizzling and cracking noises. Turning off my PC and unplugging it from a wall socket for a while solved the problem for now. (Not the dead channel one though |

Fried soundcard? Is that a bbq soundcard or a medium rare grilled soundcard? I never had fried souncard for launch until now. Sounds nasty though. |

Mr.Deviance I kinda hoped you'd not answer to this topic since your desire to mock and screw with people is pretty much always on 11 here. But maybe I'm wrong and misunderstood your reply, and that's why I ask: Are you going to make a point here and help me or you're just here to make snarky comments? To answer your question: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fry Quote: 6. Fry (...) 2. To destroy with excessive heat or electrical current. And it's lunch, not "launch". |

No I actually, took note of your problem. I made a small joke and then I sympathized with you in my last line. I don't have anything useful for you other than to suggest you buy a new card. Don't really see why would you even expect help from anybody, when your problem is obvious and clearly unfixable. |

My apologies then, though you could at least include a smiley or wink to indicate that you're joking (I'm terrible at reading intentions, I know What I'm looking for is a person who's had/heard of a similar problem and can assure me that there will no longer be problems with the sound chip as long as I take the necessary precautions. And also what would those precautions be. The soundcard is fine (it's a built-in on a Gigabyte P35-DS3L mainboard), except for that one right channel in one socket only, so I don't see any reason to buy a new one (unless someone will recommend otherwise - that's why I created the topic) |

What the hell do you mean when you say that it works in one socket only? Do you think those audio jacks are there just for the sake of being extra jacks? The fact that your audio works in a different jack, is most likely because you are hearing a different set of audio channels. Is your audio system 2.0, 2.1 or 5.1? If you are using a 2.0 system you are practically hearing different channels now instead of the main ones, if you moved your speakers in a different jack. As for being able to maintain the broken audio card just by taking precautions that is not guaranteed. Nobody can guarantee you that your card won't totally blow up soon. My best advice to you is to buy a new pci audio card and go to bios and turn the integrated one off forever! |

I said it doesn't work in one socket only, and only the right channel doesn't work in it. My Realtek HD Audio Manager pops up with a choice window when I plug anything (headphones or microphone or such) in any socket and asks which device has been plugged in. All I had to do is check "Headphones" option and it plays normal sound on either socket. My card is obviously in 5.1 system (6 sockets in the back) but I don't have a suitable set of speakers and I never needed it. I do have a Sound Blaster 128 PCI card but it's apparently too old because when I plug in the headphones I hear a rather loud noise. I was hoping that I will find someone here with enough electronics knowledge to assure me that only one channel is destroyed and it will not backfire on any other channel on the card. Nevertheless, I'm off to buy a new one Approved for locking. |
