Hello, I am new here. Excuse me if this is not in the right section.
I own a copy of the Orange Box. However, on May 26, 2010, Valve released an automatic update that broken almost all of the mods. Many of the older mods are no longer being developed and are thus unplayable. I want to play those old mods, so I was wondering if there is any way for me to get the Old Half life 2 back. Is there a steam emulator that I should use? I still have my Orange Box DVD. I am main interested in the Single Player HL2 mods.
If there is any way for me to fix what Valve broke, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I would try to make a standalone just from the original GCFs without including the new Source engine 2007 stuff. Then I would just paste the mod folders in the games main directory and add -game <mod folder> to the hl2.exe shortcut.

Ok, I've read your tutorial, and I have a couple of questions.
I've copy the files from my Orange Box dvd to my computer:
DVD1: The Orange Box Retail_disk1.sim The Orange Box Retail_disk1.sis The Orange Box Retail_disk1_0.sid The Orange Box Retail_disk1_1.sid The Orange Box Retail_disk1_2.sid The Orange Box Retail_disk1_3.sid
DVD2: The Orange Box Retail_disk2.sim The Orange Box Retail_disk2.sis The Orange Box Retail_disk2_0.sid The Orange Box Retail_disk2_1.sid The Orange Box Retail_disk2_2.sid
Then I know I am supposed to unpack the sid files. So I used Phoenix launcher to unpack them. I saw Half life 2, ep 1, and ep 2. When I clicked on a game, it automatically selected the gcf file. So I then unpack HL2, ep1, and ep2 into three different folders. Now I only see hl2.exe in the HL2 folder but not the Ep1 or Ep2 folder.
My question is that should I unpack HL2, ep1, and ep2 into one folder instead?
Also, Phoenix loader said that some files are not on the disks:
Half Life 2 base content.gcf Half life 2 game dialog.gcf source 2007 binaries 2.gcf Episode 1 2007 content.gcf orangebox media. gcf
Yet I use these disks to install HL2, EP1, and EP2 in April 2010, before the update.
If you can take a look at what I did and give me some directions and point out the errors, it would be great, thanks much!

No you just need to unpack the source engine files in the episodes' folders.I recommend using MiSteamInfo to know what you need for every game, see if the GCFs from Steam still work properly without the Soource engine 2007 port.

Doesn't matter,Steam keeps everything up-to-date doesn't matter if it's 6 years old or 6 hours.

Yeah, I've read that, but as you can see, many mods still have bugs, and even HL2, EP1, and EP2 have a lot of bugs since the May update. That's why I am trying to undo the May update.

Yhe1 Get the first two and hope that they aren't that much affect by the 26th May update for them to work with the old engine.Same goes for Episode 1 content.gcf the rest are useless to you.

What program is the best for extracting gcf files from the orange box dvd? there are a bunch of sid and sim files there.
I used phoneix before, but it extracted the actual files and not the gcf file. I am trying to get the pre update episode two content.gcf from the orange box dvd.
The SID/SIM question has been asked many times. If I remember correctly, there was a tool that could give you the GCFs out of those. Try using the search button at the top of this page to find that thread.
