Post subject:  Transfering offline mode to different computers

Hi there,

I was wondering if there is a wrapper that feeds Steam false hardware data so it thinks it's on a single computer all the time, so offline mode would work across multiple computers (offline mode records hardware). I don't want to go down the virtual machine route because of bulkyness, and also because games would require a graphics card to be emulated.

Has a wrapper already been created that would do this, or if not do you think someone would be up to the challenge?

So you would start Steam through a wrapper that fed false hardware to it, restart in Offline Mode which records this false hardware, then copy the Steam folder to another computer and run it again through the wrapper to feed it the same false hardware.

Wasn't that data encoded based on a few registry keys? They were two Windows-related ones and a value called "io" in Steam's settings, if I remember correctly. I suppose you can look them up and try making them the same in all your systems... but note I haven't tested that, so I don't know whether it'll work (and I think it sounds too easy) or if there are any consequences!

Yeah that does sound a little too easy, but I'll look in to it anyway. Also maybe the "ClientRegistry.blob" records hardware as it changes size when you start offline mode (it gets bigger).

If people have more suggestions then please do contribute. Many thanks,

UPDATE: If it does use the registry in some way it can't be exclusively, as I've tried "ThinApp" which emulates the registry onto other computers and I get the "no login infomation can be found on this computer" message. Which means it knows it's not on the same hardware.

From what I remember, Valve did some changes to how Steam logs in and how the password is saved. So transferring the .Blob file isn't going to work.

I wonder what logs hardware then and could be fed false infomation. Hmmm.
