Steam use to store keys in the "localconfig.vdf" file, but a recent update has stopped doing this. Does anyone know where they are locally stored now, or has Steam started to encrypt this infomation? I know some games can be right clicked to view them, but there are others that don't do this (Return to Castle Wolfenstein etc) and would like to use them for non-Steam versions.

Regards.

I have windows 7 by the way.

Someone told me normally you can't view keys in the registry because the registry encrypts them. I've looked in hkey_local_machine/software/valve/steam/apps/ but there is just a list of (default) entires with no key numbers.

keys use to be listed in localconfig.vdf (after a game was installed)

are you blind? hkey_current_user\software\valve\steam\users\*someNumbers*\cdkeys
they are not encrypted!

I've looked in there before and keys have never been entered there, despite the location called "cdkeys". I have 2 installed games for example called 'Unreal Tour 2004' and 'Arsenal of Democracy', and their keys AREN'T in that location you point to. There's just "(default) REG_SZ (Value not set)" and nothing else there. I swear.

maybe not every game stores its key there but for example games for windows live games store their key there...
i have several keys stored at the location i mentioned, but the last time i played these games is about half of a year ago, so maybe they changed the location.
but i don't think they changed it.
