Don't want to follow the tutorial? Dowload the .rar with everything done here http://www.mininova.org/tor/332534 - Torrent thanks to 2501

Firstly please note: I do not take any credit for creating these files. The files are the property of talented crackers both here and elsewhere. Credit to the origional author will begiven where I know it. All I have done is re-packed some of these files and made sure that the instructions actually work. I have tested this on multiple computers.

I apologise for the length and detail of these instructions, but is the only way to ensure that everyone understands.

The only thing I take credit for is these instructions.
~Vista

Please note: This also works as a Live DVD (no setup required) so you can play on any windows PC with sufficient system requirements.

[Start Pre-requisite list]

episode 1 shared.gcf - thanks to markastor
Part 1: http://www.filefactory.com/get/v3/f2.php?f=c2e692
Part 2: http://www.filefactory.com/get/v3/f2.php?f=66484c

half-life 2 episode one.gcf - thanks to markastor (http://www.filefactory.com/get/v3/f2.php?f=8618c4)

Note: you must click on: "Don't want a premium download? Click here to access our free download links."
Then use FTP download option - HTTP is unstable and often gives corrupt files.

Half-Life 2 Episode One - Patcher (v2 - dormine's)
http://rapidshare.de/files/22007503/halflife2_ep1_retail_to_v2_patcher.7z.html

source sounds.gcf
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
base source engine 2.gcf

The above GCF's are available from - http://cs.rin.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31661 - courtesy of Necro$

Offline Patch Files - http://www.easy-sharing.com/479362/EP1FixFiles.rar.html - A combination of the files from .Blizzard and REVOLUTiON
Mirror: http://www.filegone.com/20c6 - thanks to desss

[End Pre-requisite list]

Pre-requisite Actions: Make sure you have downloaded all the files and places them all in ONE folder, preferably on your desktop.

Step One: Download GCF-Scape

Step Two: Install and Launch GCF-Scape

Step Three: Create the folders "C:\HL2EP1" and "C:\HL2EP1PRE"

Step Four: Extract all the contents of "source sounds.gcf, source materials.gcf and source models.gcf" into "C:\HL2EP1".
MAKING SURE NOT TO EXTRACT base source engine 2.gcf you do this later.

Step Five: Using 7Zip or a compatible 7Zip extractor, extract "half-life 2 episode one.gcf" and "episode 1 shared.gcf" into "C:\HL2EP1PRE"

Step Six: Extract the files from Half-Life 2 Episode One - Patcher (v2 - dormine's) into "C:\HL2EP1PRE"

Step Seven: Edit "build_hl2_ep1.bat" so that it contains the following (all on one line):

gcfpatcher.exe patch "episode 1 shared.gcf" "episode 1 shared.patch" "episode 1 shared.gcf.new" 929CE07840B7EEB585AD8977E1DDA6DF

Step Eight: Run "build_hl2_ep1.bat" wait until it has finished, make sure that the program does not show any error messages at the end.

Step Nine: If all has gone well, copy "episode 1 shared.gcf.new" and "half-life 2 episode one.gcf" to your desktop.

Step Ten: Rename "episode 1 shared.gcf.new" to "episode 1 shared.gcf"

Step Eleven: Use GCF-Scape to extract the contents of episode 1 shared.gcf and half-life 2 episode one.gcf to "C:\HL2EP1"

Step Twelve: Extract the files from "EP1FixFiles.rar" to your desktop, go into the folder "Ep1FixFiles" then copy all the contents in the folder (hl2.exe, and folders) not the Ep1FixFiles folder to "C:\HL2EP1" making sure to OVERWRITE any files.

Note: this pack contains the client needed to run the game e.g. hl2.exe

Step Thirteen: Load GCF-Scape, open "base source engine 2.gcf" extract to "C:\HL2EP1"
Note: the game will hang at the loading screen if you do not follow this step

Step Fourteen: run the command/or create a shortcut to "C:\HL2EP1\hl2.exe" -game episodic
Note: this the what you need to do to actually play the game

Step Fifteen: Copy the bin dir from "EP1FixFiles" back to "C:\HL2EP1" overwriting the files, otherwise various error messages will be displayed e.g. "Lost Connection to steam server" or C++ errors!

Live DVD only extra steps (note: you will not be able to save):
Burn the files to a DVD. The following is not needed, but is recommended otherwise you will have to manually start the game each time using the command.

I recommend creating a file called "start.bat" and putting the following in it
@echo off
echo Starting HL2: Episode One...
@hl2.exe -game episodic

Then make a file called Autorun.inf and putting the following in
[AUTORUN]
open=start.bat

as it will then auto start the game when you put it in.

Play HL2: Episode One and Enjoy!

Here's a few screenies I took for your viewing pleasure - if you can't get something to work/don't understand something... just leave a message here and i'll do my best to answer it.

I know, I was refering to the

Also, I don't think provision's can be used as a live DVD, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah, that's the only downside I can think of to it.

I thought I read somewhere that you could specify a different save path by changing the configuration... but I can't seem to find it.

Edit: Nope. Apparently it is hard coded.
Well, you can either play using the DVD and not use any save games... or just use it to play (on your hard-drive) that way saves do work.

That will be intresting if u can change the save path. then u could put all games; CSS, DODS, HL2, HL2:DM, HL2:LC, HL2:EP1... Into a DVD with the bat files for execution, modified config files for save games into a diffrent directory like "C:/HL2/SAVES", then make a nice boot menu for the whole thing. and realse it on DVD.. i will build the whole into a dvd image for people download if they wish... i could add all maps into games for quicker play... i will add a modied masterservers list aswell. if anone wants the DVD done please contact me and i will upload it to ftp.

I'm a little confused, can you please split the instructions up? Becasue right now you have how to unlock a locked GFC with what you do to play the game with already unlocked GFC's. Everything else is good, good thing I use common sense :-).

And Hck-dev that would be so cool! A all - in - one DVD for the best Source Engine games! I've seen it done where the main screen to choose which game you want play is made with HTML like the one for F.E.A.R.

OR, edit the window xp installer or just make a game installer?
