Hey guys, how's it going?

This is the first I'm posting and I started using steam just 2 days ago, so I'm a huge noob here. :oops:

I've donwloaded a few games from the content sharing section of the forum, but when I try to run them on Cracked Steam I keep getting the "Steam needs to convert the game content.......to new new, more efficient format" message .

From what I discovered here in the forums, this has to do with new acf game format, right?

What I'm still not clear about is if there is any way to solve this.

Is there anyway to convert the ncf-type games I've downloaded to ACF format?

Are the new games being released here in the forum already coming in the ACF format?

Thanks in advance for the help. :)

To answer your question, yes, but only for legit users, who own the game, else you have to download the files from someone who uploaded them.

It's easier to just create a fake .acf file. :wink:

appmanifest_AppID.acf

  1. "AppState"
  2. {
  3.     "appID"     "AppID here"
  4.     "Universe"      "1"
  5.     "StateFlags"        "516"
  6.     "LastUpdated"       "1334388860"
  7.     "UpdateResult"      "0"
  8.     "SizeOnDisk"        "3465172340"
  9.     "BytesToDownload"       "476918880"
  10.     "BytesDownloaded"       "476918880"
  11.     "UserConfig"
  12.     {
  13.         "language"      "english"
  14.         "name"      "The name of the game here"
  15.         "GameID"        "AppID here"
  16.         "Installed"     "1"
  17.         "appinstalldir"     "C:"
  18.         "subscribed"        "1"
  19.         "purchasetime"      "1234567890"
  20.         "purchasecountry"       "US"
  21.     }
  22. }

Ha ha, will this really work?

Did Valve really think this through?

Guys, thank you all for the quick replies.

Steam006 are saying that all I have to do to play the games I've downloaded and are giving the new format error is to create an .acf file?

For example, I've downloaded Oddworld: Abe's Oddyssee in ncf format (.ncf file + content folder) and let's say it's AppID is 1234.

All I have to do is create a file called appmanifest_1234.acf, open the file, copy the text in your post, and fill in the "name", "gameid" and "appinstalldir" parameters to match the game?

The .acf file goes in the steamapps folder in place of the .ncf file, right?

You need to fill in "appID", "name" and "gameid", you don't need to do anything with "appinstalldir".

Yes

Hey Guys!

First off, thanks to SubZeroPT for bringing up the question, and to Steam006 for answering it! :D

I'd like to add that I had to open the newly created .acf file with the right-click context menu choice "Open" (very top), ticking "Select the program from a list", clicking "Browse" (about 3/4 way down the window), then finding the "Cracked Steam" folder in my Program Files (I run XP), and choosing "CrackedSteam.exe". I mention this because Cracked Steam didn't seem to recognize it by itself after restarting. It needed a little nudge.

I'm in the middle of switching graphics drivers, so it gave me a DirectX error, but I have every reason to believe that it's going to work...

Hey Steam006, if you could elaborate a little more on how to exactly create a fake .acf file i would greatly appreciate it. Like i don't know where to create the folder (like in the "common" folder or the "steamapps" folder?) to put this information in, how to paste this information in the folder (do i create separate folders inside the "appmanifest_appID" with each folder being named the things listed in Steam006's post?), and will the .acf file just appear or do i need to rename the .ncf file? Any help from anybody explaining how to do this would be VERY much appreciated. Sorry for being such a noob guys. I just really wanna play Morrowind :(

You can get a sample ACF file by downloading Spiral Knights. It's free to play and that game uses ACF now.

I downloaded Spiral Knights but its ncf not acf. I just need to know how to create the file. Can anyone possibly give a step by step tutorial or post some pics of the process?

Just use the information Steam006 posted.

All you need to do is make a new text document and change the extension to .acf. ACF files go inside your SteamApps folder (the place where NCF and GCF files are). You can edit this file with Notepad or any text editor.

appmanifest_AppID.acf

  1. "AppState"
  2. {
  3.     "appID"     "AppID here"
  4.     "Universe"      "1"
  5.     "StateFlags"        "516"
  6.     "LastUpdated"       "1334388860"
  7.     "UpdateResult"      "0"
  8.     "SizeOnDisk"        "3465172340"
  9.     "BytesToDownload"       "476918880"
  10.     "BytesDownloaded"       "476918880"
  11.     "UserConfig"
  12.     {
  13.         "language"      "english"
  14.         "name"      "The name of the game here"
  15.         "GameID"        "AppID here"
  16.         "Installed"     "1"
  17.         "appinstalldir"     "C:"
  18.         "subscribed"        "1"
  19.         "purchasetime"      "1234567890"
  20.         "purchasecountry"       "US"
  21.     }
  22. }

You need to replace:
- the "AppID" part in the filename with the game's designated AppID (the number you see in the game's Steam store URL) (example: appmanifest_12900.acf for Audiosurf, because its URL is http://store.steampowered.com/app/12900/)
- where it says "AppID here" with the game's appropriate AppID
- where it says "The name of the game here" with the game's exact name on Steam (don't enter false information) (example: "Audiosurf", "Portal 2" etc.)
- where it says "AppID here" (GameID) enter the game's AppID again

You don't need to do anything else. Save and your .acf should be ready for use.
