Hotfix - .0530
    • We have hotfixed Doors not opening due to Fog of War.

Hotfix - .0526
    • We have hotfixed the problem with adventurer hall-created companions not being able to unlock doors or chests.

"Big Ticket" Items
    • Bears and Cats can now be equipped with hats. This is most likely not a joke... but might be a joke.
    • Double-clicking to equip items was causing passive abilities to get removed from the character. This has been fixed and we were able to retroactively fix the problem for people that have already run into the issue. If you open your saved game in the latest patch, your characters will be repaired.
    • Fixed a problem where attributes on characters could permanently increase by equipping certain items. This will also retroactively fix the problem in saved games that have characters with this issue.
    • The crash in Raedric's Hold has been fixed.
    • Fixed the looping audio sounds that can occur if you play with minimized tooltips.
    • Previously Wizard summoned items could persist after the spell's duration. This has been fixed and it will also retroactively fix the problem in saved games that have characters with this issue.
    • The items Drinking Horn of Moderation and Talisman of the Unconquerable were causing Ciphers to permanently lower their amount of focus gain. We've included a fix to retroactively resolve the issue on Ciphers but the effect is still on the items. Unfortunately the fix will not fix the broken effect on those items, so you'll need to keep those items unequipped until the next patch. If you do equip them, perform a Save/Load to fix your Cipher.

Features
    • Added graphics setting to toggle antialiasing levels. This can improve performance on lower end machines when disabled.
    • Added pro tips to the Glossary.
    • Many new icons for items.
    • Added new voice set reactivity for lockpick, poison, enemy spotted in stealth, spell failure, death, immobilized, and completed task.
    • Added indicators on the loot screen when looting crafting and quest items.
    • Party can now use lockpicks that are in the Stash.
    • You can now cast AoEs on party member portraits and the spell will be targeted at the companion's location.
    • Digital soundtrack now includes track names, track order, metadata/tags, and album art.

Balance
    • Monk unarmed attack buffed by 1 point at the top end.
    • Arbalest damage has been lowered.
    • Fast melee weapons do slightly more damage.

    • Tuned ranges of many Wizard spells to be higher.
    • Slicken spell is now a single hit AoE.

    • Reduced the price of the Brighthollow Hearth and Courtyard Pool.
    • Heart of Fury will now apply to all damage types.

Systems
    • Fixed issue with Wizard's summoned magical items getting stuck after save and load. Wizards will be restored to a proper state after loading a game.
    • Changed one of the fatigue status effects to not end with combat.
    • Fixed save game issues with spells and abilities that place down traps.
    • Fixed issue to prevent Ciphers from casting abilities without the required Focus.
    • Restored modal flag for Reckless Assault.
    • Set Transcendent Suffering to not be combat only.
    • Fixed duration issue with Plague of Insects.
    • Fixed companion audio triggers for some status effects.
    • Hunting Bows had the wrong speed descriptor. They are now listed as Fast.

    • Fixed scripted music for the forge knight combats in the keep.
    • Visual effects in the introduction cutscene should now be triggered properly.
    • Fixed conversation of the guards in Raedric's Hold to not repeat.
    • Added cape and armor to the loot for the Fampyr boss.
    • Fix to Osrya's starting timer not being attached to the trigger in the area.

UI
    • Fixed sound issue when collapsing the tutorial UI.
    • Fixed issue with double clicking items to equip. This is a retroactive fix and will restore characters with proper stats.
    • Fixed issue where camping supplies were disappearing when added to Stash.
    • Cage Cursor setting should not turn off after loading a scene or cutscene and is now on by default.
    • Fixed cropping on a few portraits.
    • Fixed issue with highlighting dead bodies and containers in the fog of war.
    • Fixed item stacking issue that was stacking items inappropriately.
    • Reduced the intensity of the explored fog of war on the area map, and fixed an issue where the shadow layer was causing the area map to be darker than it should be.

Items, Spells, and Abilities
    • AoE indicators should now properly resize if the caster has a sub 10 Intellect score.
    • Fixed an issue with over-time aura spells not applying the correct value on the final tick.
    • Knock Down will now correctly be applied for the full duration of the effect.
    • Mantle of The Dying Boar will now trigger at 33% Endurance with the effect of 5 Endurance a tick.
    • Talisman of the Unconquerable will now give a 1.25 Focus multiplier instead of .25.
    • Blooded should trigger properly in all cases now.
    • Boar Animal Companion bonus damage should now work as intended.
    • Prone Reduction mod should now work correctly.

Quests and Companions
    • Fixed Aloth and Kana speaking when they weren't in the party in one of the last levels.
    • Sagani's fox-specific banters now require the appropriate items in the player inventory.
    • Falanroed's dialogue no longer displays a script node.
    • Durance will now properly discuss your dream with you if you've already discussed his staff.
    • Relaxed some constraints on Durance's quest conversation. This allows all characters, regardless of background or stats, to finish his quest.
    • Players can now loot the nest in Oldsong.
    • Fixed an invalid conditional check in one of Pallegina's conversations.
    • Heritage Hill tower will be fully revealed when exploring the map.
    • Fixed spawn issue in a scripted interaction near the end of the game.
    • Fixed an invalid creature spawn in the Ogre Lair in Od Nua.
    • Sagani no longer references the antagonist by name before you know it.
    • A container in the Catacombs of Od Nua will now remember if it was looted.
    • The "Master's Tools" quest will now work if you have the required items before starting the quest.
    • The "A Two Story Job" scripted interaction will not require a second grappling hook to climb down from the window if one was already used to climb up.

General Fixes
    • Fix for camera movement problems when the game is paused or in a cutscene.
    • Fix to retroactively restore party movement in saves that display movement speed problems.
    • Made some fixes to movement speed problems that were being reported (e.g. Boots of Speed).
    • Fixed stacking health problems with the gul's "Vomit Blood" ability. This fix should retroactively fix your saved games.
    • Optimized Save/Load game system for better performance.
    • Optimized how scene transitions are handled for better memory usage on 32-bit machines. This may allow players to transition to new areas without running out of memory.
    • Sound Sets from hired companions will now be properly restored when adding them to the party from the stronghold.
    • "All Stronghold Upgrades" achievement now checks 25 upgrades instead of 26. This will properly reward the achievement if you already have fully upgraded your stronghold.
    • The "Kill All Dragons" achievement will now properly fire if they are killed indirectly (like by a trap). This is a retroactive fix and will be rewarded if the dragons are already dead.
    • Fixed issue where store prices were getting exceptionally large after receiving a discount.
    • Fixed issues with gaining infinite XP from bad Stronghold data.
    • World time will not get very large in some cases after Save/Load.
    • Modelling offset with Durance's head has been adjusted.
    • Icon scale is now correct on Hearth Harvest and Reghar Konnek.
    • All shaders will now compile properly under DirectX 11.
    • Restored all the missing effects in the intro cutscene.
    • Removed Blunderbuss item from an early game loot table.
    • Changed the cursor type on the blood pool in the Temple of Skaen to conversation.
    • Fixed a few save game issues with dead summoned creatures.
    • Fixed issue where occasionally a crash would occur when initializing the Steam API.
    • Draggable windows are now handled properly when running at very high resolutions.
    • Swamp Lurker's animation won't spaz anymore when the game is paused.
    • Fixed an issue to prevent binding mouse buttons to window controls.
    • Game will now pause if you Alt-Tab during a cutscene in full screen mode.
    • Audio will now resume properly if the game loses focus.
    • Fixed an issue with infinite load screen if you transition while hovering over a container.
    • Characters will now wait for their idle animation before trying to reload which fixes an animation sync issue.
    • Damaged characters performing AoE attacks will not overload their AI state stacks anymore.

New Features
    • You can now rename save games.
    • You can now change the portrait and sound set of characters from the character sheet. Click on the gear icon to open the customization window. You can only use this feature on player characters and hired (non-companion) characters.
    • New Stash sorting. You can now sort stash by item type, enchant score, and sell value.
    • Added a news feature on the main menu to keep you informed on patches and Kickstarter updates.
    • Added a new color for unique items in the inventory.
    • Added a new hotkey for switching weapon sets on selected characters.
    • You can now bind extra mouse buttons to Ability hotkeys.
    • There's a new option in the Difficulty settings to reset newly recruited companions to level 1 (without losing the experience) when they get added to the party for the first time. This will allow you to level up companions to your liking.

Balance
    • Reblanced XP rewards of some quests, particularly the bounty quests, to prevent parties from hitting max level before Twin Elms.
    • Ciphers now start with 1/4 max Focus instead of 1/2.
    • Wizard and Cipher's base endurance has been raised from 30 to 36, and per level from 10 to 12.
    • Wizard and Priests health multipliers were raised from 3 to 4.
    • Interdiction range has been reduced from 20 to 10.
    • Tuned down damage on the Retaliation mod.
    • Citzal's Spirit Lance will now do 50% more damage, is faster, and has an increased AoE.
    • Sanguine Plate's Retaliate mod has been replaced with Spell Holding: Frenzy.
    • Wind Blight's Returning Storm is now set to 1/encounter.
    • Earth Blight's Teleport ability is now set to 2/encounter.

    • Companion AI - You may now set your companions to use AI. For those of you that do not want to micromanage your party, you may now choose to have the AI perform basic commands for you. You can activate and deactivate the AI control at any time, so you can still have ultimate party control when you need it.     • Improved Creature AI - Creatures and NPCs will now act more intelligently and make better use of their abilities and spells.

    • Story Time mode has been added. This difficulty setting is for people that want to experience the Pillars of Eternity story without having to build a party of adventurers focused on combat.
    • Athletics has been revamped so that it allows characters to cast Second Wind. A powerful healing ability. A higher Athletics skill increases the size of the heal.

    • The Action Bar has been reorganized so that it is easier for players to see their Per Encounter, Per Rest, and Watcher abilities.

    • Increased the base amount of Focus gain per point of damage dealt from 0.25 to 0.35.

    • Puppet Master changed from long cast time to an instant cast.
    • Puppet Master base duration increased from 10s to 16s.

    • All Prayer Against _____ spells now have a base 20s duration (was 30s) and radius increased from 2.5m to 3m.
    • Constant Recovery, Rapid Recovery, and Veteran's Recovery now all heal more Endurance per tick and all scale with level.
    • Ancient Memory now heals double the Endurance and scales with level but has a 45s duration.
    • Beloved Spirits now also heals twice as much and scales with level.
    • Removed an unnecessary restriction on stacking Weapon Type Specialization abilities. This should fix issues like Flick of the Wrist being suppressed by Prey on the Weak.
    • Fixed some stacking inconsistencies with Cipher powers that caused some spell effects to suppress other valid effects.
    • Holy Radiance now heals base 15 Endurance.
    • The Sword and the Shepherd (Kind Wayfarer talent) now scales with level (+7 every 3).
    • Shielding Touch deflection bonus increased from +8 to +12 (Shieldbearers of St. Elcga talent)
    • Renamed Duty's Bond to Aegis of Loyalty and the talent now grants 15s of immunity to confused/charmed/dominated instead of a +20 defensive bonus for 20s.

    • Faith and Conviction now scales for NPCs, +1 def and +2 to all other defenses at 5th, 10th, 15th level. Base Faith and Conviction bonuses reduced from +5 defenses, +10 to all other defenses to +4 def, +8 to all other defenses.
    • Knock Down is now a full attack (was only a primary attack previously) meaning that dual-wielding characters will now perform two attacks.
    • Play Dead should be be removed correctly when you retrain.
    • Miasma of Dull-mindedness penalties reduced from -10 to -6 and duration from base 20s to 12s.
    • Arkemyr's Wondrous Torment adds perception penalty. Penalty against subsequent targets increased and jump range increased from 5m to 8m.
    • Arkemyr's Capricious Hex now has variable durations for each of its afflictions.
    • Chanter skeleton summons set to 2nd level (were previously 1st).
    • Reny Daret's Ghost duration from 20s base to 12s base.
    • Clear Out base damage increased from 15-22 to 30-40.

Here are the patch notes for the newly released Backer Beta Build 301.

Important Information Regarding Saves
Saved game location has changed. You can now find your saved games located in C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\Saved Games\Pillars of Eternity. Keep in mind that old saved games will not be automatically moved to the new location and it is suggested that users start new games instead of trying to load old ones. Loading old games on the new build may cause undesirable behavior.


New Features

Rebalance to Attributes:
  • Might: Damage and Healing
    • Every point of Might over 10 increases a character's base Damage and Healing by 2% (penalties if under 10).
  • Constitution: Stamina and Health
    • Every point of Constitution over 10 increases the character's base Endurance and Health by 2% (penalties if under 10).
  • Dexterity: Action Speed
    • Every point of Dexterity over 10 increases Action Speed by 2% (penalties if under 10).
  • Perception: Accuracy and Range
    • Every point of Perception over 10 increases Accuracy by 1 and Range (for non-melee) by 5% (penalties if under 10).
  • Intellect: AoE Size and Deflection
    • Every point of Intellect over 10 increases the character's AoE sizes by 5% and Deflection by 1 (penalties if under 10).
  • Resolve: Concentration and Duration
    • Every point of Resolve over 10 increases a character's Concentration by 3% and Durations by 5% (penalties if under 10).

Stealth has been revised:

The new stealth system relies on the distance of a scouting character from an NPC to determine how quickly the creature will enter Alert and Combat states. A comparison of characters' individual Stealth skill ratings and creatures' levels modifies this rate. N.b.: A character that does not have LoS on the creature is not considered to be "inside" their radius.

When characters enter the scouting state, they gain a Stealth Meter. Currently, it's simply a solid circle completely filled with color (green or, if in colorblind mode, blue). This is a basic implementation and the art will change. Every NPC in the world has one of five stealth detection ratings (from Oblivious to Supernatural) that correspond to radii in the game.

When a scouting character gets into a creature's stealth detection range, their Stealth Meter will start filling from green/blue to yellow. This informs the player of how much time they have before the creature will enter Alert and Combat states. If the meter fills completely yellow, the creature will move up to a constant-defined max distance toward the character (e.g. 3m). At the same time, the yellow meter will begin to fill red. If the meter reaches full red, the scouting state is dropped, the character is detected, and hostile creatures enter Combat.

We will have a base rate at which these fills occur, but they can be modified by two elements: 1) the relationship between the character's Stealth and the target's level 2) the character's proximity to the target within the radius. The two modifiers both directly multiply the standard rate.
While this system is fully implemented, it has not been tuned and does not have final art.

Stamina is now called Endurance:

The stat previously known as Stamina is now called Endurance since that seems clearer to more people. Additionally, we are no longer doing the behind-the-scenes conversion of a percentage of received Stamina damage into Health damage as the system was opaque to players. Now, Max Endurance is multiplied by a factor determined by class to arrive at Max Health. This does mean that Health values are much higher than a traditional "D&D range", but in practice these values were already used in the background. In this update, when a character receives damage, it's applied equally to Endurance and Health.

Here are the current Endurance to Health multipliers for each class. "Front line" classes tend to have more Health as they are expected to be damaged and healed in combat with much greater frequency.

  • UI arrows have been added to show active engagement. We are still evaluating their appearance and functionality internally, so please give us feedback on their usefulness.
  • Hit effects for elemental damage, blood, and gibs have been added. Fire, shock, corrode, and frost damage will display visual effects on hit. Some creatures will gib when critically hit on death.
  • Dead bodies now turn into loot containers and can be looted directly.
  • New Talents.
    • This is the first batch of new talents more will be added in the coming weeks. All icons for the new talents are temporary.
  • New icons.
  • New sounds.
  • New portraits.
  • Many, many rules fixes and bug fixes for class abilities.

  • Spells: many spells have been tuned to have faster casting times, shorter ranges, do/heal more or less damage, apply different effects, attack different defenses, or do different damage types.   • Vile Thorns, Lay on Hands, and many others.

  • Enemy AI will now scan for new targets when path is blocked.

  • Improvements to AI instruction sets. Most enemy AI can now target specific party members, including back line characters and casters.

Talents and Core Abilities
Over a hundred Talents have been added to allow more options for class customization during the level up process. We've adjusted how the core class abilities are granted to allow for more flexibility within each class.

Revised Skill Progression
You can no longer spend points to upgrade skills during level up. All skill advancement is now done through Talents, and thematically grouped Talents will award additional skill points if chosen during level up. Your background choice during character creation will also reward additional skill points.

Fog Of War
The Fog of War has been upgraded to obey the sight visibility for the party members. No more cheating by looking over walls and closed doors in dungeons!

Experience Points
We decided to add a few more ways to gain experience points to increase the regularity that XP is rewarded throughout the game. We've added minor bestiary, exploration, lock, and trap XP rewards. Bestiary XP is rewarded when new entries are unlocked in the Bestiary page in the Journal, and will stop being rewarded if the entry is complete. Exploration XP is given out when new areas and landmarks are discovered in the world.

Glossary
An in game glossary has been added with explanation and definitions of game and combat rules. These entries are hyperlinked so you can easily find information on what you are looking for. You can click directly on keywords in the combat log, or open up the Journal's Glossary page.

Hotkeys
Hotkeys can be assigned to any ability on the hot bar and additionally be access through a quick hotkey menu. We still intend to revise how this system works, but please provide feedback if you like or dislike our direction.

05. 2014.11.26. - Game is updated to beta Build 364
Change log:
A new Windows Backer Beta update has been distributed through Steam. We have made a lot of fixes and some changes since the last update. In addition to general fixes, the team has been hard at work making some changes based on a play week that we did a couple of weeks back. You may even see a few new Abilities for classes based on the team's feedback.

You will also notice that many of the icons are now in place and we have even started to get some VO in place.

We have not been able to get an updated Mac build, but we are hoping to put one out sometime in the next couple of weeks. One good bit of news for Mac users, though, is that the build should be able to run directly from Steam now.

Spells/Abilities/Classes/Gameplay
  • Trap Triggered and other similar bark texts persist for too long.
  • Miss/Graze/Hit/Crit Ranges are off by 1 value.
  • The Goldpact Paladin talent Enduring Flames is causing Flames of Devotion to apply a permanent DoT effect.
  • Best of Weapons are not showing the proper damage type in the combat log.

06. 2014.12.23. - Game is updated to beta Build 392
Change log:
Hello, all. Build 392 is now live for the Backer Beta. Currently, we only have the Windows build up on Steam, but we are looking into the Mac build. If we place it up I will update this post.

Backer Beta Build 392

Important Changes
  • You will notice quite a few combat balance changes in this build. Be on the lookout and let us know what you think.
  • You will notice many UI polish changes. Some screens may even be entirely new (loot screen, I'm looking at you).
  • Most of the icons are now in the game. There are still a few that are missing, but those should be few and far between.
  • Some final VO is in the game. You will also notice sound sets are in and hooked up.
  • Skill system has changed back to a point-buy system.
  • Talents are now organized during level up.
  • Important Known Issues
  • It can be difficult to loot bodies sometimes. It can help to try to loot the bodies toward their feet. One workaround is to do a save/load. The body will turn into a loot bag and you will be able to loot it properly.
  • Saving with a modal active will cause the modal to appear to be non-functioning. If you deactivate and reactivate the modal a couple of times it will start working again.
  • Pressing the "Take All" button in the Loot UI, if a lootable body is underneath the "Take All" button, will cause the cursor to get stuck. This can prevent you from opening doors or interacting with objects. To clear this you can do a few things: mouse over a loot container, loot anything, transition, or save/load.
  • The "proof" mods (e.g. Pierce-proof) are not stacking correctly and will have problems after a save/load. Best to avoid those mods for the time being.

Fixed Issues

Save/Load/Persistence
  • After loading a game all party members revert to their first weapon set
  • Save/Load before transitioning to Dyrford Village causes 0 seconds travel time and a black screen (Workaround in Thread)
  • Save/Load causes the inventory paperdoll not to show weapons and shields until another character is selected
  • Enchanted Mods disappear after loading the game

Area Design
  • Korgrak's attacks are not causing recovery
  • Force Attacking Medreth, just after attaining the quest, A Cat and Mouse, causes you to be unable to complete the quest
  • Can't pick the Pilgrim's Crown plant in the southern central area of Dyrford Village
  • The Temple Skaen entrance is visible on the area map without first moving the statue
  • Boar companion is left behind when Medreth leaves
  • Dengler's Store cannot be accessed after returning to the Dracogen Inn

Spells/Abilities/Classes/Gameplay
  • AI does not consider Range bonus from Perception when moving into range to cast a spell
  • Dexterity is currently not properly affecting action speed (animation times and recovery times) - Partially Fixed
  • Exiting Scouting Mode causes a loss of FPS that persists until Load or Transitions
  • Hired adventurers spawn inside the player character
  • Chanters cannot use the Cautious Attack modal while chanting
  • Chanter's talent Ancient Memory causes the party to twitch consistently

  • Accuracy shown in the Inventory and Character sheet do not reflect the bonus for single 1 Handed weapons and Enchant/Mod accuracy effects

Audio
  • Dyrford Ruins hallway plays the SFX of footsteps splashing through puddles, even though there is no water
  • Combat Music is no longer playing

Other

Mac
  • Launching the client through steam while running OSX Yosemite causes the client to crash (workaround in thread)

  • Descriptions for spells and abilities presented in character creation and level up screens cannot be scrolled
  • When wielding a single weapon in your offhand and nothing in the main hand the UI indicates that you are dual wielding

  • Feedback is not clear that clicking portraits in shop allows you to compare examined items
  • Combat HUD occasionally displays a "stuck pip" on the right side of the HUD even though the character is injured

  • UI elements and selection circles can be partially or completely obscured by spell VFX and distortion effects
  • Culture bonuses are always factored in character creation, even when the user hasn't reached that step in the process yet

Hey, everyone. A new backer beta build is live on all three platforms.

Our major focus over the past few weeks was reducing in-game memory usage and other optimizations. We are still optimizing, but things are coming along nicely.

You will also notice that Josh has been doing lots of balancing throughout various systems in the game. For example, traps should be extremely deadly now. If you weren't on the lookout before, you should be.

Hey, everyone. Backer Beta 480 should be live for all OSes. This is going to be the last update to our backer beta. If you are worried that your feedback and bugs won't have time to be integrated into the game, don't be. We are going to be creating patches for day one and beyond, so any feedback you give now may go into those patches.

I wanted to personally thank you for helping us make Pillars of Eternity a great game. The feedback, bugs, and, sometimes, criticism has been very useful in shaping a game that we think all of our backer will enjoy. We are lucky to have such dedicated fans.

Have fun!

Fixed Issues:
  • Pathfinding should be improved. The characters will clip briefly if their path is blocked and they are not in combat. This should reduce congestion in tight areas.
  • Many armors, weapons, and character heads have been polished.
  • Many spell and ability fixes.
  • Ranger companions should follow the party much better and get stuck less.
  • Vanity pets now follow the party correctly.
  • Many save and load issues relating to items have been resolved.
  • Lots of new portraits have been added. We have also cleaned up some of the previous ones. These aren't all of the portraits that you will get to choose from at launch, but a fair amount.
  • AoE Spells/Abilities no longer resolve if the caster becomes Paralyzed or knocked Prone.
  • No cultures gave Constitution or Perception as a bonus. Now Rauatai gives Con and The White that Wends gives Per.
  • Summoned creatures do now display VFX when they despawn.
  • Green highlight effect used for active abilities and modals on action bar now fade VFX when paused.
  • Level-up spell/ability/talent descriptions now adjust AoE range based on Intellect.
  • Lights in character creation and inventory screens no longer cause bloom and unnatural glare on paperdolls.
  • Queueing an ability/spell with shift+click no longer sets Shift as a hotkey shortcut for the ability.
  • Spider Queen in Ogre Cave now follows nearby spiders into combat.
  • Auto-pause on low Health or Endurance no longer pauses every time damage is taken after falling below 25%.
  • It is now possible to replace items on Quick Items tab in inventory.
  • Enemies affected by Charm Beast now change team when they are charmed.
  • Firebrand sword fire effect is no longer lost quickly.
  • Difficulty no longer persists between character save files.
  • Class specific talents are now mentioning accuracy bonuses to weapons.
  • It is now easier to resize the combat log diagonally from the corner.
  • Player can no longer dual-wield pistols, wands, rods, and scepters.
  • Talents that modify abilities should now all function properly.
  • Two handed style description was modified to make it easier to understand.
  • Wizard's grimoire should no longer appear in character's offhand while some types of weapons are equipped.
  • Feral Druids are now dropping all their inventory.
  • Enabling Fast mode now disables Slow mode (if active) and vice versa.

Well it's BACKERS ONLY beta, which means it will be much harder to get it. So i wouldn't be surprised if it took some time after the release to get here or in the worst case scenario if it came at all, before the official release. But yeah this game got 74k backers so we can hope :D

Not all backers tho. Maybe 1/3 of them more likely less had pledged extra for early access beta. And not all will play it; I'd say a solid 10k players will be playing the beta hours from now :P
