Can someone share a clean steam rip?

The Darksiders version just doesn't work. (Can't remember where I got the files, think it was igg-games) I try to run the installer and it just pops up a random error message window titled "REM error", with the rest of the actual content being something utterly unhelpful. While I remember some previous installers from this group being rather obnoxious as well, it's never completely failed to work. Not sure what's going on this time.

Thanks to TwelveCharzzz (and Yumivi who posted about their experience with the latest Darksiders installer), I managed to workaround the problem.

To Everyone:
This installer will not work if your system's non-Unicode locale is set to something else besides English. Might also support other European languages, not sure. So in order to make it run, either change your system's non-Unicode locale temporarily to English, or, if you're like me and hate changing it for something like this, because it messes with other system settings and programs, then use a locale switching program like MS Applocale or NTLEAs. If you're used to dealing with programs in different languages, you'll probably already know one or two programs like these.

In my experience in working around problems arising from non-Unicode programs with different languages, I've never run into this odd problem of not being able to run a supposedly English program on an English system (with secondary non-Unicode language support set to something else). Usually problems happen when the program is in another non-English language that's different from your system's locale. The only time I've run into this is with scene group created installers, and even then, I've only run into one other group whose installers from a certain period of time had this issue.

At least with the other group's installer, there was something in the error message that popped up that suggested to me it was likely caused by conflicts with the system's non-Unicode locale. Whereas with the Darksider's installer, I just get accused of pirating by a pirate....

Since they were talking about their newly updated installer, it's very likely this problem will appear in ALL the latest Darksiders installers, until they fix it. If they ever fix it.

There is a pretty easy way to bypass this, install 7-zip, use it on darksiders.bin file and extract it to a folder of your choice.
Credits for this solution go to Henjin, found it on the nurse love addiction thread

Weird, I never saw & never experienced an error from scene-installers. I tried it by myself & the installation + starting the game went fine without a single problem. And my (system) language is not in english.

PS: the new installer is kind of sick ::P

What is the language? Something Western European?
It's likely it only conflicts with something outside that scope.

This is a silly error that shouldn't be happening in the first place. I can't even begin to fathom the programming logic behind it.

What part of it is "sick"? The part where they still insist on calling every single game you install as "porn"?

==================================
Another thing about this release... It seems the Japanese localization file was stripped. Trying to run the game with the Japanese language setting would result in a black screen. :wall:

I could really use a full, clean Steam rip shared by someone.

Yeah, Western European languages mostly all use the same code page. I expected it would probably work with those languages.

In fact it's more than likely the Darksiders people are native speakers of a non-English language, probably Western European, and something in their coding, below the user interface where you can't see, is using special symbols/characters that is causing mojibake with anything in a different codepage. Which somehow triggers that silly warning from Darksiders thinking people are hacking and "cloning" their code. Oh, the irony of being accused of pirating by a pirate. But anyway, most people who don't have any experience with this wouldn't know what I'm talking about, or have any interest in it. :)

If it works for you, just realize you're one of the lucky ones.

Installer works OK for French OS too.

Nice game, btw. Are there others Japanese "pure adventure" games like this ? (not RPG/combat, I mean)

I have to agree, with all the little problems it has, this falls in my personal top 10 for the year so far. The atmosphere is so good in this game, it genuinely creeps me out at times. More than what an animetronic does anyway :P

Also if you want another game like this that is in my opinion very excellent, 999 from the Nonary Games collection. That game was pure bliss from start to finish, and one with good voice acting and an intersting story from start to multiple finish.....es
